Why can't I buy Ultra Tampons in Tesco??

After being caught out on holiday in the U.S.( good ol' peri-menopause) I went shopping for tampons. Why have I been saddled with Super Plus Tampax as a maximum offering since I was a teenager, only to find the Americans can buy 'Ultra' Tampax tampons (super plus-plus capacity), which do the job brilliantly? Research shows that Amazon sell them in UK, but at a ridiculous price and anyway I would prefer to have them handy in Tesco / Asda and such (never know when my last purchase might be - at 56 its getting a bit ridiculous ..). Does anyone know of a 'normal' chemist / supermarket where you can get these in the UK?

I wholeheartedly agree about seeing your gp. I had really heavy periods and one day of flooding. I thought it was just part of being a woman and something to endure once a month.

I went to the gp about something unrelated and it came up in conversation and he prescribed tranxemic acid and also sent me for a womb and cervix biopsy just to be certain it was nothing serious.

It's been life transforming. I know that sounds dramatic but to be able to go about every day things and not be constantly worried that I was going to flood through my super plus tampon night time towel and clothing has been such a relief.

Polly There are only 10 in the ultra boxes, not 20.

Even so I agree about seeing the GP if you're getting through 10 ultras a day. I was lucky on day 2 & 3 if an Ultra lasted 30 minutes and I was seriously anaemic. There are options to sort it out.

10 a day is too much.

The medical guidance is no one should get through more than a box of towels or tampons in one period- so that's a box of 10-12 give or take.

A tampon should last a couple of hours at least and really a lot longer.

12 tampons over a 5 day period is like 2 or 3 a day? Does that include night time?
I thought that tampons are only supposed to be kept in for 3 hours so 6 tampons and an overnight solution like a towel would be average. I change my tampon every time I go to the loo too.

eyebrowsonfleek · 18/08/2017 13:32

After 2 heavy days I can get away with a super or super plus changed every 3 hours plus a towel overnight. That's still 5 or 6 tampons a day.

Omg never heard of Ultra but they'd have been a lifesaver before I got my Mirena.

LOL that America has them.

I’m bringing up an old thread as I’ve recently been to America and discovered Ultra, and found this thread doing a Google search for them. I wonder why we don’t get them.

I'm in the same boat.

Incidentally you can buy Tampax ultra on UK amazon just fine - both as variety multipacks and as large boxes.

I discovered them accidentally via the multipacks, I can't stand applicator-less tampons and only doubling up ultra tampons and period knickers or pads gers me through a morning or afternoon at work on day 2-4.

I've only just discovered that none of the shops sell them. I wondered if they weren't allowed in the UK (J&J seem to habe discontinuedtheir OB range) - but tampax' UK website seems to show the variety multipacks.

Playtex sport also seem to gave an ultra version.

I wonder if they just don't think it will sell? Or they are worried about the higher risk of TSS associated with higher absorbency.

Superdrug do an own-brand version that compares favourably (particularly in terms of price) to the Killers (😄) Lillets ones according to the reviews on the website. It’s frustrating that the Ultra ones aren’t more readily available though 🤨
