Meningitis type rash - reassurance needed

Hi,

I noticed DD3 (11m) has a small, not paticularly dense pinprick rash but it doesn't disappear under pressure that I first noticed this morning. SHe has seen the GP (after initially being offered a 11am appointment the recpetionist rushed me in - thankyou) who has confrmed that it is the meningitis type rash, but no other symptoms. The action at the moment is to monitor the (at home) every 30 mins - which I am comfortable with.

She has no other symptoms, she is bouncing round the room like a rubber ball. The GP explained that menigitis is not the only other cause - it could be a harmless post viral rash amongst other things.

I am just looking to see if anyone else has experienced this and when I might be able to stop panicking...

where is the rash?

SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 30/03/2007 09:49

On her hands and wrists. Which is another thing that makes him less worried.

do you know what youre looking for when you monitor her?

My dd sometimes gets this pin pick type rash when she's banged herself or been vomiting and i've always been told it'[s burst blood vessels. I wouldn't think you have too much to worry about if she is fine in herself but worth keeping an eye on. Has she been biting or sucking her hands or wrists? this can sometimes do it too.

SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 30/03/2007 09:58

No he asked about her sucking her hands. She sucks her thumb but not her hands.

Yes I have to look for the rash spreading or becoming more dense mainly but I shall also be watching temp, sleepyness (no chance of that at the mo!!), aversion to light...

TBH I have a few red blood spots permanently on my arm, but thought I have a few more a few days ago which have disappeared now. That gives me some reassurance.

She is asleep now (nap time). It doesn't seem to have spread. I feel a bitter happier now. GP said if it was meningitis it would be likely to spread withing a couple of hours

OK turning the question around. Has anyone had a child running around happily and perkily with meningitis...there is only one thing that is a little unusual and that is that she is happy playing with her toys and not the remote, DVD player, shoes, ... .

I think the rash is fading, but GP called (as planned) and is a little concered that he doesn't know what has caused it.

My daughter had a pinprick rash to both her feet. Didn't fade with glass tumbler. To cut a long story short, it was caused by a virus too. Faded eventually but was a concern at the time.

Ds once had the same rash on his legs and I was hysterical but confused as he was perfectly well.

We saw the gp and it turned out it was from his dad tickling him a bit roughly on his knees .

The doc said not to worry, it was the type of thing he'd have done too when playing with his kids.

SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 30/03/2007 21:40

Doc did ask if she had been pulled about by teh hands by DTDs...but not to my knowledge. Have been paranoid all day, she has had the thermometer stuck in her ear more times today than in her life the poor thing....I kind of know she is OK cos she is bouncing around happily but just needed some reassurance....

She has gone all day without rash spreading AT ALL which is a very good sign. If anything I think it has faded a little.

AM mentally exhausted tho...could do with a drink but daredn't in case I have to take her to A&E...

my ds1 gets a rash like that from knocks or scratches. I first noticed after he had asked me to scrath his back, and later this rash appeared all over where i had been scratching. He has also had it underhis armpts from being swung about.

Also when i was 19/20 i suddenly developed a meningitis type rash on my tummy, but no other syptoms. It was just viral

glassslipper · 30/03/2007 21:48

you sound like you have a good Dr. hope she is all clear tomorrow.

SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 30/03/2007 21:52

He is a v good doctor actually. He gave me a list of things to watch, told me to ring if I needed to and tell the receptionists to interupt surgery so I could speak to him if I needed to. He rang me at lunchtime to check on her...

I think he acknowledged that looking at the bigger picture this option was better than spending the day on the childrens ward.

dd had menigitus last year and i can say the last thing she did was bounce around

for a day or so before the rash she was niggly and bad tempered and this was worse the day the rash came out

in our case it spread really quickly i noticed 2 or 3 dark spots on her chest about 930am and by 1115 her whole of her chest and back were covered

all she wanted to do was sleep in fact for a couple of days we couldnt wakd her up

however from experience if you are slightest bit worried please go to a and e! it is worth sitting there for 24hrs of grumpy child from hell to be told its only a virus and they will be fine

heya123 · 30/03/2007 22:20

ds had a pinprick rash all over his stomach and back, and up to his neck and scalp a bit too about 2 months ago.
i was terrified, thought it was meningitis and took him straight to the walk in hospital to be told that it was simply a viral rash and would clear up on its own within a few days.
i was so relieved but its better to have it checked out and be safe then sorry!
