Over last couple years I have had occasional feeling of muscles not working properly when swallowing. Over last year this has progressed to discomfort in lower oesoephegus when swallowing liquid or food.it feels like food cant be pushed down! Over last 6 months I have started getting severe spasms when eating or drinking, on occasion. That has happened twice over last week and chest is still painfull. it is the most horrific feeling and feels like My chest has cramp. It lasts for about 5-10 mins but is really severe. 10 years ago I had neck surgery (to remove green field filter) and sternotomy , which has resulted in Phrenic Nerve damage and paralysed hemi diaphragm. Could this be causing my problems? I am awaiting an appointment with Gastrologist at moment but there is a 4 week wait. Any ideas about what is going on ?? Any one with similar problems??

Have you checked if there is some issue with your epiglottis? Inflammation of the epiglottis is known as epiglottitis. A distant ex colleague of mine had that.

Other than that, I have absolutely no idea.

Heartburn or hiatus hernia? My asthma can present like that too.

Thanks for replies. Visitor, is the epiglottis at top of the throat/back of mouth? My pain and discomfort seems to be lower down the oesophagus. ,Lizs, I don't have acid reflux but I do seem to be burping air frequently!! Hadnt thought of Hiatus Hernia....must google...

Achalasia, your gastroenterologist should be able to do tests. My mum suffered for years with it progressively getting worse and lost a lot of weight.

Please please see your GP for an URGENT endoscopy or CT referral. The signs you describe could be a hiatus hernia, but (and I don't want to scare monger) they could also be signs of something more serious and it's worth ruling out an oesophageal mass asap.

JohnHunter · 16/08/2017 17:44

It sounds like oesophageal spasm or achalasia. It's not likely to be something sinister if developing slowly over a number of years. In any event the gastroenterologist you're booked to see will be well-placed to find out what's going on. I do foresee an endoscopy in your close future, though!

Thanks all. Have appointment with Gastrologist Tues morning. My GP wants me to get Endoscopy and CT scan. Hopefully will get some answers soon.

Please see your GP ASAP. As said up thread it could be serious.

Saw a Gastrologist and he feels that it may be related to Opiods that I take for Chronic Pain (Targin ), or from scar tissue from previous chest and neck surgery. He put me on Pantium and has me down for an Endoscopy with Biopsy. I am on Warfarin , so he explained I must have my INR under 3, to carry out Biopsy. Have being taking new medication for few days and have noticed slight improvement with discomfort, but still have had few spasms when swallowing and feeling of something stuck in throat. The wait continues...
