Hi, looking for some opinions please!
I'm currently 49 and have been on the progesterone only pilI for 3 years, since my youngest DD was a few months old. My periods didn't resume until about 8 months ago and were light and irregular , but as I was still breastfeeding I wasn't surprised. However the bleeding has become increasingly more irregular and I have had light spotting most days now for weeks. Though I'm trying to discourage my DD from feeding(I never expected to still be bf at this stage and didn't set out to do so!)she's very determined and still wants to bf briefly at bedtime/early morning so I'm aware that could be affecting my hormone levels , but also I'm wondering if I could be perimenopausal. I wonder if my body is just totally confused! I will try to book an appointment with my GP this week but just wondered if anyone had any similar experience ?

Have you done a pregnancy test?

Well, I am no expert but if you're 49 it would be very unusual if you weren't in the perimenopause.

The average age for menopause is 51, and peri can last for up to 10 years.

I'm 47 and for the last 4/5 years things have been winding down....periods becoming lighter and closer together, then skipping altogether. I am currently having a period roughly once every 4 months, and even then it's spotting more than anything, My GP said that almost anything is possible and can be considered "normal" as hormones start to disappear (or whatever they do)

BUT - breastfeeding is obviously a very hormonally driven pastime (!!!) so that's bound to have some kind of effect. The GP will be able to advise more but I strongly suspect s/he'll say that it's all normal.

Wow, 2.4 yrs of lactational ammenorrhea. Unusual for modern western women.

My cousin had her last kid at age 43 & breastfed for 3+ yrs. She didn't describe your symptoms but she mentioned health issues b/c of combo of her age & perimeno & non-stop pregnancies & yrs of breastfeeding.

Light spotting most days : I seem to recall arm implant (contraception) did this to me, which is why I had it out after 12 months. Hope GP can give you good advice.

Thank you very much for your responses.
lljkk I BF DC1 for 7 mths, DC2 for 22mths,DC3 for just over 2 yrs and I didn't start menstruating again till after I finished feeding each time, also it was just dwindling middle of the night feeds for a while towards the end with each of them.
DC4 seems more persistent than the others were!
I had my AMH levels checked in 2012 (We had an unexpected pregnancy which I sadly lost and then we decided to have some tests to see if we had a realistic chance if we actively ttc). At that stage it was over 6, which I was told was a low result, but relatively high for a 44 year old, I don't know if it's any sort of indicator for when menopause would be likely to occur?
I then had another few MC and we had decided it was too heartbreaking to continue ttc when we realised I was pregnant with DC4, who was born just after DC1's 21st birthday. Anyway, I'll book an appointment and see what the GP says, thanks again for taking the time to reply.
