Cramp??

3littlefrogs · 29/03/2007 18:57

Yes - cramp. Usually due to stress / posture eg sitting at computer for long periods of time...........

unknownrebelbang · 29/03/2007 18:58

lol 3littlefrogs, my son was told he'd got a buildup in his neck following his game of rugby in PE.

Yes it really is. Muscles need oxygen and glucose to work - that is why you breathe faster when exercising, and if you are running a marathon you need isotonic drinks containing salt and glucose. Your circulation pumps the waste products produced by the burning of the "fuel" in the muscles (lactic acid) out of the body via the kidneys. (I am really oversimplifying this)

When the lactic acid isn't being pumped out fast enough it builds up in the muscles causing burning and severe pain - if you are running a marathon it is at this point that you collapse in agony. A similar effect is produced if muscles are held "clenched" in one position for too long - as in poor sitting position etc.

Hope that makes sense.

Massage is brilliant for cramp - my rugby playing son will testify to that. (I am a massage therapist).

oh no, oversimplifying is just fine at this time of day, lol.

They do say you learn something everyday.

I daresay DH would have know (former marathon runner) but erm, as ever, he's at work, lol.

Thanks for that.

You are welcome. Hope your son feels better soon.

Not quite cramp here

Another term is doms which means delayed onset muscle soreness and is what you feel after doing hard exercise as mentioned in the link.
