Thrush for 10 years, Mirena coil - help!

I have had recurrent thrush for about 13 years. I had a coil in my 20's but it caused thrush so I had it taken out. I then had 2 children (now 8 and 9) and have had a mirena coil since then. In the last 2 years the thrush has got so much worse. The last few months it has been waking me up in the night and the itching is so bad that I can't seem to help myself - before I know it I have scratched whilst half asleep and caused tiny tears which then hurt the next day. Sometimes I can't sit down.
One year ago I had numerous trips to the GUM clinic and had every treatment on offer for both thrush and BV. In the last 6 months I had a 3 month course of low-level antibiotics for facial rosacea which may or may not be connected.
I have tried everything. No sugar diets, drinking kefir, all the usual about hot baths/cotton underwear etc.
Does anyone have any ideas for me?
I think having the coil out is probably a good idea - but I love not having periods and the thought of starting that again aged 40 - post kids is depressing. What do other people do? Is there anything out there that stops periods? I don't really worry about the contraceptive side as I will send husband for the snip if I have to... I am at the point where I have to do something about the thrush before I go totally mad. Anyone with any ideas - please share. Feeling rather desperate and don't know what to try next. Conventional medicine hasn't worked - diet/self help hasn't helped either.

Antibiotics give me thrush every time. Thrush yeast live on everyone, but the good bacteria keep them at bay. When destroyed the thrush can run riot. So I guess it's a question of how you restore that good bacteria and I'm not sure of the answer to be honest. But certainly antibiotics will never help. Hugs.

P.S. the mini pill very often stops periods. I'm on Noriday and have one maybe every few months, often a very light one too. But many people don't have them at all.

I imagine you'll have been tested for diabetes? Just checking but am sure your GP would have thought of this.

I had the same problems with two copper coils (baby I'm between), had a couple of years on the pill, which sorted it, and now have a Mirena with no problems.
Maybe give the mini pill a try? I was on the combined and periods really weren't that bad. I'm 40 too.

the pill caused me to get thrush every month just before a period. i got it so often it became canestan resistant.

i would look at non hormonal birth control and try gyneodaktarin (ive spelled it wrong but you get the jist) cream - the specialist told me it works on 98% of cases - even if thrush is canestan resistant.

i always have a tube of it in now but dont get it too often anymore since coming off the pill. it works quickly. ask your gp?

Have the GU clinic typed your thrush? I had chronic thrush for over 10 years, tried all treatments and eventually discovered that I had candida glabrata rather than Candida albicans. Glabrata doesn't respond to any of the -azole treatments, so is really hard to treat. I had some pessaries of Flucytosine in the end which sorted it for me.

I've had mirena coils for years (had endometriosis) and am now thrush free with my mirena.

I suffered with thrush for years. I had it at least once a month. It was always worse after I'd had sex.I too thought it was the coil and had it taken out.

I then split up with my partner. 18 months later I met someone else and haven't had thrush once with him. I believe my ex partner was constantly reinfecting me, even though he'd benn treated too.

I know that's not much help but just another persons story.

Snap op! Had my mirena coil taken out and the thrush stopped, waited 6 months and got the copper coil and the thrush came back, had that taken out and again the thrush stopped and now have appt to be sterilised as can't take anything else. Having permanent thrush was a nightmare, if I were you I would have the damn thing out!

Thanks so much all of you. Yes - been tested for diabetes - all fine. Interesting about there being a different strain of thrush.. Never heard of that and it could be something to explore. I'm going to look into all of the other options people have mentioned too. Spent another 'awake' night feeling sorry for myself last night. thanks all

@Banderchang do you recall the compound of pessaries you took?
