MMR Blunder

At my local medical centre (we are not registered there as I chose to go to a Dr's a little further away) a boy was given the MMR without his mums's consent. She had taken him for DTP and checked with the nurse when she signed the consent form that.

The boy had already received the single vaccines last year privately and had previously had a reaction to the meningitus jab which landed him in hospital.

Its terrifying to think what trust we put in these health professionals.

I know this is not the same thing, but my son was accidentally given the Hep C vaccine without my consent. It was still at the trial stage and I had asked for it not to be given.
My GP phoned me at home to tell me of his mistake. He was very apologetic.
My view was that everyone makes mistakes and I was not particularly bothered. It's not like he had been fed poison.

Really off the point now but at my grandmother's funeral the cemetery workers dug the wrong grave. We were gathered at the graveside moments from lowering the coffin when my mum realised it was not her father's grave ( she was to be laid to rest by her husband)that had been dug! We all saw the funny side and it would never have crossed anyone's mind to sue though a few people suggested it.

For ds1's pre-school jabs we've made arrangements for it to be the other way around i.e. he will have the MMR but not the DTP. I hate to think what the consequences could be if they gave him the DTP by mistake. He had a bad reaction to the earlier DTP and it's not something I ever want to go through again.

I would never, ever, ever consent to my kid being vaccinated with a pre-prepared syringe. In other words, the vaccine is drawn into the syringe by a nurse in the absence of the mother. I would want to witness the bottle it came from, to ensure a double check on the drug being administered - just like what happens in hospitals.

my dh was injected accidentally with TEN TIMES the correct dose of steroids by his work nurse!

The nurse who gives the vaccinations at our gp's always has me read the label on the vial before she puts it in the syringe to give to the child. And then I hold my child while she injects. It would be virtually impossible to have something given to my child without my knowledge. I thought that this was supposed to be standard practice. If it's not at your surgery, you should insist on it anyway.
