Hi welliemum!!! Just wanted to say I hope it all goes well with the Cochlear Implant surgery, which I believe is today (29th). Keep us posted about how it goes!

I've had great news myself...Implant Centre called last week and said they had a cancellation on the 17th April, and would I be interested. You betcha! So, I won't be far behind you!

Will be thinking of you and try to keep this bumped for when you get discharged. Sooooo excited for you!

Much love,

jx

Wow! Thanks for the good wishes!

Just came to write you a message kokeshi and found this!

Well, I have my implant - just home from Christchurch where I had the op.

Feeling a bit wobbly but main prob is wanting to rest and not being allowed to by dd2.....

Brilliant news that yours will be so soon! The op is nothing to worry about. I've hardly needed any pain meds at all. Just a bit unsteady and tired as I said. Have a huge bandage on my head which looks far more dramatic than it really is!

Switch on is scheduled for 30 April so keep fingers crossed!

Was just coming on to say hi as I thought you came home today and would have access to computer. Glad it all went well and hope the wobbles ease soon. Lovely to meet your gorgeous girls the other day.

welliemum · 31/03/2007 05:10

Thanks YM!

I just posted on the meetup thread too - am keen for another meetup sometime!

That's fantastic welliemum...so pleased for you. Incidentally, did you have a choice of what kind of implant/processor you went for? I was supposed to go down for a day with the Chief Physicist, to discus the different options (I think there are 3 styles?). But now that I'm on the 17th - god that's only 2 weeks! - I'll have to decide the night before. I don't really know much about them though. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I hope you heal nicely...lol at your dramatic head wound!

Much love,

jx

The 17th is just round the corner! Exciting!

I had a choice of 2 - Med-El or Cochlear.

The surgeon said he had no preference at all. I read the glossy leaflets and the results which were very similar for both, and eventually chose the Med-El on the fairly flimsy basis that it was slightly newer.

I honestly don't think it makes much difference - I think in your shoes I'd ask if the surgeon/unit has any preference as surgeons do sometimes develop a preference for a method/device, in which case I'd go for that.

welliemum · 03/04/2007 19:25

Choosing the colour was agonising though!

Yeah, me and Oxford Street...

kokeshi · 04/04/2007 21:38

Ooh, what colour did you go for in the end? I've asked another implant user who just had her's replaced. She said she went for the Nucleus one as it seems to be the preferred model here. She also mentioned about the products being updated so I should find out about that I guess.

It's all very strange, I can't quite believe it actually. The literature said that they usually implant right handed patients on the left side to allow note taking when on the phone(if the results are good enough obviously). I have really bad tinnitus in my right ear so that would make sense to me.

Anyway, keep posting about how you get on...how are you feeling now? Did they shave off a lot of your hair? So many questions!!!

Yes, what I liked about the implant I chose was that they said it was reasonably future-proof with forward capability or whatever the jargon is.

The colour I chose - after much agonising as it seemed impossible to find an interesting colour that would go with everything I ever wear - was a sort of charcoaly black. I have dark hair so I think it'll blend in reasonably well.

Am now 8 days post-op and feeling great. I was really feeling flattened at first, but I think was related to having a baby who can't be put down, won't go to anyone else and won't sleep! My balance was also quite bad at first and that was tiring too. So my advice would be to try to plan to have lots of rest the first couple of days (circumstances permitting!).

It wasn't nearly as painful as I thought it would be - they put an elephant dose of local anaesthetic into the scar in theatre, and I just needed a bit of paracetamol or brufen every now and again to keep on top of it. Not needing anything at all now and I feel completely back to normal (apart from zero hearing but that's not a big change).

Don't worry about the hair - they just shaved a thin stripe above and behind my ear. It's covered by the rest of my hair and not noticeable as far as I can tell.

Any more questions, ask away!
