DD (15) woke me up, screaming in pain, probably period

She has Tranexamic Acid tablets for periods and has just taken one, so I'm hoping that will sort her out.

But is such agonising pain (she had difficulty breathing and had to use an inhaler) a symptom of anything else? Is this just terrible period pain? She doesn't think it's appendicitis because it feels just like a wildly exaggerated period cramp.

The pain is so bad that she passed out by the way, before she woke me up.

Call 111?

sunnnydays · 09/08/2017 04:17

Could definitely be appendicitis, my Dd had an op for it yesterday and described it as a serious period pain. Call 111, I hope she's okay!Flowers

Broken11Girl · 09/08/2017 04:19

This is concerning, really doesn't sound like normal period pain. I would take her to A&E or call 999 Sad Flowers

BoffinMum · 09/08/2017 04:22

Take her to A avd E right now
Don't let her eat or drink until she's been checked out for appendicitis

lizzieoak · 09/08/2017 04:22

Can period pain be that bad? When I was 14 my mum ignored my appendicitis and I walked myself to the hospital (where they diagnosed me and called my parents). Best be on the safe aide and get her checked.

AskBasil · 09/08/2017 04:27

Appendicitis is my big fear, but she took the tranexamic acid about half an hour ago and the pain has subsided a bit, so I'm hoping it is just period-related (also it would be a massive coincidence if appendicitis started at the same time as period, but not impossible).

Was just wondering if apart from appendicitis, it could be something else period related.

She's saying she can go back to bed now and sleep, so am not sure whether to drive her to A&E or whether by the time we get there, drugs will have kicked in properly and she'll be OK. She's never had this much pain before.

Def a hospital job. I've just had my daughter in A&E with suspected appendicitis. She was in so much pain she ended up on Oxycodone and was still at an 8/10 on the pain scale.

Turns out that it's the start of gastro but they were very concerned about appendicitis or an ovarian cyst.

I felt pretty stupid taking up an entire day in A&E but the surgical staff were great and told us that level of pain is always an emergency situation.

Travelledtheworld · 09/08/2017 04:47

I was prescribed tranexamic acid to control the bleeding, not as a painkiller. Check with the doctor, but I think she needs to take a painkiller as well.

Travelledtheworld · 09/08/2017 04:49

PS thinking about you all OP.
Hope you get the problem sorted.

VisitorFromAlphaStation · 09/08/2017 04:50

I'm thinking about "Endometriosis", it's been talked about on the news so that's why I know what it is. Wikipedia: "The main symptoms are pelvic pain and infertility.[1] Nearly half of those affected have chronic pelvic pain, while in 70% pain occurs during menstruation."

BoffinMum · 09/08/2017 04:55

When I had appendicitis the pain was like period pain,

Italiangreyhound · 09/08/2017 05:10

I would call 111 or 999 or go to A and E.

Could she be pregnant and it be eptopic, I always think of that when people talk about terrible pain.

Get it checked out, I don't think any of us are doctors and we have not seen your daughter.

Good luck and do not let anyone tell you you are wasting time or resources because your child is worth it.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 09/08/2017 08:06

Endometriosis can cause severe period pain to arise and it also caused me to almost completely pass out on more than one occasion.
I have ended up on the floor with it writhing in agony.

I would certainly keep a daily pain and symptom diary logging everything.

She needs to be seen by medically trained personnel. If it is not appendicitis A & E should refer her onto a gynaecology ward where she should see a gynae to be further evaluated.

justanothernameagain · 09/08/2017 08:09

Take her to A&E. Better to regret taking her than to regret not taking her IYSWIM.

That's what I tell myself anyway.

UrsulaPandress · 09/08/2017 08:12

Hope your DD is ok.

Mine gets long difficult periods but not at that level.

welshweasel · 09/08/2017 08:15

Let her sleep. If it's still bad in the morning get her seen. Appendicitis doesn't typically start as a severe pain and won't settle that quickly with simple painkillers. Endometriosis, ovarian cyst etc could cause severe period pain. Depending on local arrangements GP may be able to refer up for same day scan.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 09/08/2017 08:20

It could be a ruptured ovarian cyst, that is extremely painful and the pain would be in the same place as period cramps. It would also be a short severe pain.
Other symptoms would be heavy periods, bloating (tummy) and pelvic pain.
Most cysts disappear in a month or so without treatment but a gp can arrange an ultrasound to diagnose.

My other thought would be endometriosis.

C0untDucku1a · 09/08/2017 08:24

I also thought endometriosis. Ive a friend who used to pass out with the pain.

Spudlet · 09/08/2017 08:27

I used to faint regularly from period pain, it can happen. Bless her.

I went on the pill and it changed my life. I later went and pushed to be referred to a gynaecologist for investigation, although they couldn't find a cause. What has sorted me out is having a baby, but I would t recommend that!

Do take her to the dr, and don't let them fob you off - she shouldn't have to put up with this. The pill can help, there are also plenty of painkillers she could try.

honeysucklejasmine · 09/08/2017 08:33

I agree, tranexamic acid is not a pain killer. It causes capillaries to constrict and so reduces bleeding, so may have a tiny effect, but it's not a pain killer. She needs actual pain medication if she's passing out.

It could definitely be endometriosis. It takes years to be diagnosed so best get it suggested now.

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 09/08/2017 08:38

I was having a terrible period in March and what I thought was a tummy bug at the same time and didnt think too much of it. I couldnt sleep one night because the pain was too much (Soooo unlike me I can sleep through anything) so went to the doctors. He hospitalised me with suspected appendicitis, when I had my surgery it was a ruptured ovarian cyst which was pumping out chocolate blood. From all accounts I should have been in ansolute agony and I just wasnt, so you should get her seen just to be on the safe side

greathat · 09/08/2017 08:40

I used to have periods like this so it can happen. Worse than labour pain now I know. I used to pass out pretty quickly. Also If I couldn't lay down (fall down) when I fainted I used to do what looked like a seizure - docs said it was my body trying to lAy down ( would happen if I was strapped into car for example. Very unpleasant! Hope your Dd is ok!

RockyBird · 09/08/2017 08:41

Hope she's ok, OP, sounds awful

Crumbs1 · 09/08/2017 08:41

Sounds like several of my girls period pain. Three days a month curled up crying, vomiting and fainting. Just horrid. Only thing to work was pill and implant as they had less periods but even then they still need naproxen and codeine.
