Hygienist wants to do a deep clean under gum line ....

Morning all

So a few weeks ago, after more years than I'd like to admit, I made myself go to the dentist. I was very scared but pleased I had made it. All is fine no issues. Of course he wanted me to see the hygienist.

Yesterday was the lucky day
Shock

She has done the standard scale and polish however needs to do some cleaning under the gun line. For those that know, going 6mm. She tested my pain threshold and has said this would need to be done with local anaesthetic over two sessions.

This has made me cack myself. Going was tough. I know I need to have this done. Has anyone else had it?

The thought of all those needles Confused

Any other pain I can deal with except dental.

She wants me to go back in 3 months to check I've been able to maintain, then will book me in.

Btw she was lovely, amaxing, can't even say she was a witch who didn't understand. As a nervous patient she was very good.

Help?????

I've had it done but not my whole mouth. It's not pleasant but it didn't hurt. Did she explain that if you don't have it done, your teeth are likely to fall out? That was enough to make me suck it up

I've had it done a few times. I am a complete wimp and terrified. In all honesty it gets easier the more you go, but I still dread it.

It's usually quite a few injections which hurt but not massively. It's uncomfortable. I cling to the chair the whole time and the sweat pours off me.

I think my longest appointment is 30 minutes. I always end up with a headache, but that's tension.

I think it's worth it to try to save your teeth. I have bridges and gaps. At the moment I go regularly to save what I have. I also make my next appointment before I leave as I shake when I pick up the phone to make an appointment so will put it off.

Good luck. If I can do it you can.

I went after a looong time not going-I was told I had early signs of gum disease and needing to go every 3mths to have my teeth cleaned-It hurt because my teeth were so sensitive-it was the air and water I think that hurt more!
I was told I would need a deep clean also-but this never happened as my teeth/gums started to improve-I do make sure I floss or use interdental brushes.
Just recently I saw a different Dentist(mine is off on maternity) and she said one area is showing signs again! so I am just really concentrating on this area and hoping when I go back all will be ok and that she was just over zealous!
Maybe with extra care you can fix it?!
As long as they can numb mu mouth I would have the deep cleaning done if ness.

I absolutely hate going to the hygeinist - much more than going to the dentist - and have to take nurofen with codeine for the pain and a beta blocker for my anxiety an hour before I go in.

I feel for you!

Ours used a gel anaesthetic for deep gum cleaning, no injection.

Thank you all so much for your comments. I really do appreciate it. So many of your comments I could have written.

I will be going back. I half expected her to say this but hoped I and dentist google were wrong losing my teeth is not an option.

I treated myself to an electric toothbrush on the way home and am determined to get a good report when I go back Grin

Am very surprised at the comment where the poster had managed to do so well they didn't need a deep clean after all.

So overall you all think I will cope? Am considering taking some diazepam before hand just to help e relax. The problem with injections into your gus is you can't do anything to help - not like other Ines when I can focus on relaxing.

You will cope just fine.
I had my whole mouth done (in two sittings) and survived.
Ask for the anaesthetic gel where they're going to inject you and you won't feel a thing.
You'll need to floss and use interdental brushes daily as well as an electric toothbrush to maintain.
I had deep pockets before the treatment and a year on and my gums are the picture of health.

sorry to ask but are they making a lot of money from this?

I haven't had it done but I had a really bad experience with a private dentist when I was working away - I could see that him and his hygienist would fleece money from anyone. He later managed to persuade a visiting colleague that he needed 4 root canals - when my colleague got back to his normal dentist (private dentist, mine is NHS) he was told one was necessary and the others were possible in future.

cleaning below gumline - shudders.

niccyb · 10/08/2017 23:18

My dentist won't do the deep clean and has said it can only be done privately? I'm quite annoyed now as I've been asked for several years and I too have to have scale and polish 3 monthly

SomeOtherFuckers · 11/08/2017 00:22

Had 9 needles in my mouth once .... I passed out ngl ... but I'm a fainter and they didn't actually hurt that bad - like a little sharp scratch and then a gross but not painful crunching sensation. I fainted because of the idea of them not the reality x

fabulousathome · 11/08/2017 08:09

My dentist advised me to buy an air flosser, it's a machine that shoots air and water between your teeth gaps as an alternative to the floss which makes me gag. It's really improved my gum health.
