Conjunctivitus - not sure of next step as haven't had it before

Think dd2 (18m) has conjunctivitis but not entirely sure. She's got a bad cold and some of her mucus is a bit greeny (nice!) and I noticed the occasional blob like this in her eyes as well over the past 2 days. Her eyes aren't crusty though and not continually weeping, so how do I know the difference between conj and just streaming eyes from her cold? Do I have to keep her away from the childminder and see a doctor or does it depend if it's there tomorrow?

My son has just had this.
His eyes were constantly green, were very swollen ,bloodshot and were stuck together every morning.
I think your dd is just suffering the effects of a cold. But if the blobs in her eyes aren't clearing you could visit the docs?
I was told to keep my son away from nursrey until his eyes were clear as it's v.contagious.

yes...you do have to keep her away from everyone and you must not touch it too....take her to the docs first thing as its horrible as i get them

as it's linked to her cold i think you'll find the doctor would only give you saline drops. you can just keep it clean yourself. use cooled boiled water and cotton wool. dd's got it at the moment, at first i thought it was just green snot from her nose ending up in her eye. anyway, it's weeping a bit and goes a little crusty after her naps. i just keep it clean. it's going now, she's had it a couple of days.

This is how DD's started, with snot leaking from her eyes (ew...but that's exactly what it looked like) by the next day it was crusted and weeping.
I reckon you should take her to docs tomorrow anyway and get it checked, it could be starting up but it certainly sounds like conjunctivitis to me.

BizzyDint · 28/03/2007 19:51

i should add, there is such a thing as bacterial conjunctivitis (requires antibiotic cream/drops to clear it) but what you've described sounds more like viral conjunctivitis...linked to the cold virus. you can;t treat a viral eye infection, same as you can't treat a cold. just keep it clean.

Moomin · 28/03/2007 20:52

OK ta. And is the viral one as contagious as the other one? IF she's got green snot anyway, she should be kept away from the CM's I guess. I wouldn't be that chuffed if the other baby she's with all day had it and gave it to her so we should keep her off I spose.

Dullard's question: Is it seen as worse when it comes from the eyes rather than the nose (green snot that is)?

yes. the green snot is the body getting rid of the virus, once it runs clear then the actual bad stuff is out.
