The note on the back says prescriptions are free for 18 year old's in full time education. DD was 18 on 1 July. She is waiting for A'Level results and due to go to uni in September.

Is she entitled to free prescriptions until 30th June, the day before she is 19 or did the entitlement stop the day she left school A week after her 18th birthday but when there were 51 weeks left to be 18.

It really isn't clear.

If she's going to uni then she's still in full time education

NipInTheAir · 06/08/2017 16:58

Thanks Redglitter. Do you know that as a health professional? I only ask because when I enquired at the pharmacy they couldn't follow the question and kept repeating it was when they left school. But that isn't what the clause says to my mind.

She will be entitled until 31st August.
redglitter that is not correct. Prescriptions are not free to students at university.
Education is referring to full time non advanced education (school).
You can try applying for help with health costs using an HC1 form but university students do not get automatic free prescriptions in England.
Different rules in Scotland and Wales.

Thanks lazymum. That isn't what it says though. Perhaps it needs to be more specific. We don't need help with the costs though but she is going to uni in Scotland.

If shes going to uni in Scotland then presumably she'll register with a doctor locally. Prescriptions are free for everyone in Scotland

lazymum99 · 06/08/2017 17:09

Prescriptions will be free while she is in Scotland

Musicaltheatremum · 06/08/2017 17:31

And the HC 1 form is pages long. I told my daughter to fill one in and she never did. She didn't need a lot of prescriptions but it was her money so I left her too it.

Well my dd has at least 4 scripts every two months. That adds up to £240 pa. Add in the occasional extra and It's a lot.

Although in scotland she won't have to pay, it will be cheaper for her in England to get a pre-payment certificate. You pay £104 up front and get all your prescriptions free.
But she shouldn't need this in Scotland.

At least that's an expense she can forget about for the duration of her uni course.
