Low white blood cell count

I had a medical last Thursday to pass for IVF treatment (over 40). ECG and blood pressure fine. I just got an NHS text later the same day saying results back, "no further action required". Then later in the day, I got a phone call saying that in my blood count test, the white cell count was low and I need to go back. She didn't tell me how low. Other tests (liver, kidney, blood sugar, HIV, Hep B & C) okay. I've gone and Googled and scared myself (leukemia? lymphoma?). What do you think? If it was anything serious would it have shown up elsewhere? Have to wait until 16th for re-test and driving myself nuts! Has anyone had this before?

When my sister was diagnosed with cancer back in the day ( leukaemia) she was rushed straight to hospital. Was there urgency in the request for you to go into hospital?

Florabella · 06/08/2017 07:09

I've had that, and it was because my body had been fighting off an infection which made my white blood cell count low. Step away from Google - it's always going to make you fear the worst!

CycleHire · 06/08/2017 07:13

Try not to panic. Yes I think if they were worried they would have called you back more urgently. I've had blood tests where some readings were low and the gp wasn't worried. It's a combination of readings that are usually significant. Try to stay calm and yes stay away from google.

Hope you're ok and good luck with the ivf treatment.

Yes google shows some scary things that can be indicated by a low wbc count- but also plenty on there about low counts due to recent viral infections. I don't think they'd make you wait 10 days if they had any serious concerns.

Skala123 · 06/08/2017 07:17

I've just had this as well and gp just said to repeat the test in the month. No concerns no dramas!

coconutwater1 · 06/08/2017 07:25

I had this a few weeks back, feeling unwell, doctor took blood (Im not in the UK) 2 hours later the results showed very low wbc, but had dysentery, so the reason was my body was fighting an infection.

Dont be googleing, stop, you will make yourself go crazy reading all the things that cause low wbc.

If it was a problem they were concerned it was something serious, would have you back right away and not wait 10 days

I had a blood test once which showed the presence of some type of cell, I googled it and apparently the only normal result for that type of cell is nil and I was going to die within 14 days 😮. Still here a year later - never found out why that happened though. I agree with the poster above who said it's the combination of results that tell the story not one rogue reading just out of range.

Oh thank you for replying! Just needed your bit of common sense. Will just wait for the follow-up test. Maybe get a multivitamin or something. No more Google 😁

Oh gosh. If there's no urgency I'd say you don't need to worry about cancer. In my experience xxx

apostropheuse · 07/08/2017 22:04

When my mother was ill prior to being diagnosed witha Acute Myeloid Leukaemia she was called with the blood results the afternoon of the blood test and admitted to hospital the following morning.

Try not to worry.

Thank you! I'm calm now after reading the comments. I am sure you are right xx

@Wendydale I know this is a old post but I'm on the same situation, found out after my ivf bloods, and googling just made my blood run cold! Lol so did your low white blood count effect you ivf in anyway were you still able to proceed? Thanks

Wendydale · 03/02/2024 15:48

Hi there!
Yes, I’m still here and nothing has happened to me. I do take a multivitamin but nothing excessive.
I had a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby too so all those alarm bells were an overreaction.
As a poster said, the GP or hospital will pick up on it if it’s a concern. Rely on that xxx
Go and try for your baby and stop looking at Doctor Google.
Sending you baby dust by the bucket load 😘
