Mirena coil - hair loss

I have had the mirena coil for about 9 months now. A month after having it fitted (which was so traumatic) I have noticed that my hair has started shedding like mad. I have since been to the GP, had several blood tests, checked iron status, thyroid etc. I take a huge amount of vitamins and supplements in the hope that this would have solved my hair loss issue but it has not made any difference. I used to have such lovely thick hair and it really gets me down comparing it to what it is now Sad

Does anyone have any similar experience? The problem is that this is the best contraceptive I have ever used. I've tried the pill (which made me really emotional) and the implant (which made me bleed non stop for 6 months). Can anyone recommend any other contraceptives? I was thinking of the copper coil which does not have any hormones in but I found the coil fitting so traumatic that I cannot put myself through it again. I don't know if it was me or the nurse but it was so so painful and I was screaming on top of my lungs.

Would massively appreciate any advice/info on this Smile

I had a similar experience after having my mirena fitted four years ago. Apart from the fact that I bled for nearly 6 months I suffered quite significant hair loss. My gp insisted it was coincidental to the coil being fitted. I was referred to the hospital ( dermatology) to see if it was related to my scalp , which it wasn't but there was nothing to be done.
In the end It did recover a bit but I too had very thick hair.
If you google mirena and hair loss you will see a lot of things about it.

My coil needs replacing next year and apart from the fact I don't have any strings and need a procedure to remove it I need to decide if I want to go through all that again

I had the mirena coil fitted in March this year, my Dr was constantly pushing it as the best contraception method there was, after 3 years I gave in after having the implant and bleeding constantly and then the pill and like you being an emotional wreck, it was the worst decision I made.
I too had lovely healthy thick hair which started falling out in handfuls and literally snapping off, I felt detached and absent from everything, depressed, sad, I went from size 8 to 12 and had no interest in sex, I would cry at everything and became stupidly irrational. My Dr told me it was probably my thyroid, we did blood tests. While waiting for the results I googled "thyroid and mirena coil" turns out this evil hormonal device sends your thyroid crazy too, I took my coil out myself that day and have never felt better!
I would suggest your coil fitting was down to the nurse putting it in, mine was no more uncomfortable than a smear test, go for the copper, it's hormone free, you might bleed more but I believe that's the only possible side effect, good luck!

I've known a few people who experienced hair thinning after hormonal contraceptives, for some it improved after they stopped for others it was permanent. Why not try a copper foil instead?
