DS has had a variety of rashes over the last month or so and after a variety of different creams we've managed to clear most of them. But his scalp was still incredibly flaky so the dr. recommended coal tar shampoo. Well we used it for the first time last night and i have to say his head/hair look much better this morning but geez does that stuff stink!

My sister used to have this when she had very bad psoraisis (sp?). I actually didn't mind the stuff too much and it is really good for your hair...

GooseyLoosey · 28/03/2007 11:46

Ooh yes - my grandmother loves the stuff on the basis that because it smells so awful it has to be good for you!

SugarmagEatsMatzah · 28/03/2007 11:48

Well I have to admit it really did the trick and his hair is lovely and shiny this morning. But I wouldn't let him cuddle me after his bath last night because I didn't want the smell to rub off.

I love the smell of it too - when I was a kid, I had a burner/humidifier thing in my room with coal tar in it when I had a bad cough.

NotAitchNoWaySheIsElsewhere · 28/03/2007 12:28

oooh, i love it too.

SugarmagEatsMatzah · 28/03/2007 12:28

well can one of you come over and bathe my DS tomorrow please?

alphosyl 2 in 1 much more cosmetically appealing in the smell departmen, may be worth a try.
The other thing that can help with scaly scalp is using emulsidem a bath oil or leaving epaderm in over night.

SugarmagEatsMatzah · 28/03/2007 12:32

No, the coal tar is doing the trick I just can't go near him after! Hopefully this won't be a long term thing.

sugar, apart from smelling wonderful imo it's also a miracle worker. i was admitted to hospital a few years ago with two raging ear infections. the bug was antibiotic resistant (aaaagony) and the only thing that broght the swelling down was padding the ears with coal tar. it was heaven, i tell you.
you will learn to love that smell when it helps your boy.

Madoldcatlady · 28/03/2007 12:35

It smells lovely! Your nose must be broken!!

TinyGang · 28/03/2007 12:37

Mmmmm taaar. I love the smell of tar when roads are being re-surfaced on a hot summers day.

I agree about the shampoo. I used it on the children's hair once when they had impetigo on their scalps. It's good stuff but smells quite industrial when you are used to shampoo smelling of fruit and flowers.

Me and my DP both have scalp psoriasis and he uses the shampoo but I won't (not cause of smell but straighten hair a lot and worried I may end up bald ). When he gets out of bed in a morning I move over to his side cause I love the smell of it on his pillow! I'm weird I know!
