GP or minor injuries unit?

I'm really not sure which of these NHS services is most appropriate for me, can anyone give me a pointer?

I've hurt my toe in a (very) minor injury on Sunday...essentially I was cutting my toe nails using the baby scissors as I couldn't find the proper ones Blush and it left a jagged edge which I pulled. It left the toenail too short and left an exposed strip down the side. It immediately hurt the tiniest bit, but bled so I stuck a plaster on, (mainly to avoid leaving a trail of blood) and forgot about it.

Monday morning, the only reminder of the incident was a falling-off plaster, so I took it off and went about my day.

Yesterday (Tuesday) it was a bit sore, getting to really, really sore by the time I was walking (limping) home from work. It was a such a relief to be able to take my shoes off at home. The sock was damp by my sore toe so I assume it had been weeping. I washed and dressed it with a plaster and Savlon.

One of my kids accidentally brushed against it in the evening and I bellowed Sad I don't even know where the sound came from, it was excruciating pain (obviously I apologised straight away).

Today I can't get a shoe on, the pain is so severe. I've just walked (again, more of a limp) to the office in wellies which are the only thing that don't press on the sore toe, luckily it's raining so it doesn't look too odd! Grin

There is no sign of sepsis (temp normal, no tracking from the wound) so I am assuming it's local infection.

Is this a case for minor injuries?

Yep. Minor injuries, take a book and be prepared to settle in!

Ouch! That really made me wince, poor you OP!

Because of the risk of infection, I'd just pop down to minor injuries. They can have a quick look and advise either way.

It's all well and good going to the pharmacy but they would probably tell you to get it checked to be on the safe side.

Thanks, it's good to have a another perspective. It's all very well thinking it's urgent because it hurts loads, but I don't want to waste time. On the other hand letting it get properly septic is a waste of everyone's time (not to mention dangerous!) so I'm back to the beginning again.

I'll head off to minor injuries this afternoon (conference call this morning). I was supposed to be taking the kids to soft play but there's no way I can do that! Luckily DH and I are both very flexible with work.

Thanks Mumsnetters. It was infected. Cleaned & drained (ouch) & sent away with a 7 day course of antibiotics.
