DH in hospital. Anyone know what troponin levels mean? Getting worried

DH has had food poisoning since last weekend. Thought it was going but woke up this morning with chest pain (history of angina - had a heart attack a decade ago and now has a stent).

Went straight to A&E who did ECG and admitted him to a cardiac ward. Had two lots of intravenous fluids . When we got to hospital they did blood tests and troponin levels came back at 114. They've retested this evening and it's now at 121.

I'm home alone and worried sick as I've no idea what that actually means. Any nurses or doctors out there that can help me to understand ? They are now apparently giving him blood thinning drugs (been in hospital since 8am)

TIA

I believe if you have elevated troponin levels it is indicative of a heart attack or an issue with the heart, as troponin is what is found in the blood if there is damage to the heart.

I hope he is ok, it must be so worrying. He's definitely in the right place and getting the treatment he needs.

Was he just vomiting with the 'food poisoning'? I ask because my father was vomiting for several days prior to his massive heart attack. It can be a symptom...

Flumpernickel · 01/08/2017 22:01

Sorry, also meant to say, I hope he is ok Flowers

Thank you for the replies. No he hasn't vomited at all it's been all the other end and he had to provide a sample to be tested for Campylobacter.

They don't think he's had a heart attack - they've suggested he has inflamed muscle around his heart. I'm home alone which doesn't help when all I want to do is go back to the hospital. ☹️

It's very difficult to tell you what the troponin means as each lab varies on what level is positive (it depends on the assay they do) if raised, as a PP said it can be a sign of a heart attack.
Ask to speak to the doctors tomorrow. Flowers

sorry to hear this, how old is he?

Iwanttoseethesea · 01/08/2017 22:14

He's 49. I can't visit until 2pm tomorrow after the doctors rounds

He's text to say that they gave him some blood thinning drugs last night (not sure what). He slept but not very well and the consultant is coming to see him as they are worried that the levels in his blood were rising and not decreasing.

Has your husband tried asking if he can have someone there when he sees the consultant? Some wards are more flexible than others about things like this.

BiteyShark · 02/08/2017 07:47

When you get there in the afternoon see what your DH remembers. If you or your DH still have questions ask the ward if you can speak to one of the members in the consultants team to explain anything to you. Hope he recovers quickly.

Iwanttoseethesea · 02/08/2017 08:00

Thank you. He's been given his 3rd lot of fluids this morning. They took his temperature (which was getting higher last night) this morning but he didn't ask them what it was .

I'm guessing they'll do another blood test today to get the enzyme levels again although still have no idea what those numbers mean from the earlier test !!!

Still no consultants been round ....
wonder what time they'll show up ?

OP posts:
GoodBadOrIndifferent · 02/08/2017 15:20

The consultants will come round anything from once a day to twice a week. May not be today. Ask to speak to a member of the team

Iwanttoseethesea · 02/08/2017 15:43

They've been and said he needs an angiogram but he can't have that whilst he has a high temperature. There was talk of him going home and coming back in for it but still waiting for the decision to be made. No talk of troponin levels though so guess that's not a concern .
