Alternative to Corsodyl?

I have been using Corsodyl mouthwash for a few days due to bleeding gums, but it's making my tongue burn really badly afterwards! Please can you recommend an anti-bacterial mouthwash that is a bit gentler? In the meantime I'll be using hot salt water instead. Thanks.

I got really told off by a hygienist for using Corsodyl as it stains teeth (never mind the fact that it helps wisdom tooth pain; thou shalt not have stained teeth...). She ordered me only ever to use salt water.

The stinging tongue surely means it is working though?

Why are you using it? It shouldn't be an everyday mouthwash and you should never use it when you are about to have a cup of tea, for example.

OOps sorry : you said why. Bleeding gums should be seen by a dentist really if it persists...

MissBax · 01/08/2017 07:36

Warm not hot salt water is the best thing for any mouth problem really.

My dentist said corsodyl is not effective for gum disease, i have to buy the tipi brushes from boots and just do extra flossing with those to keep them clean and the gums healthy. Massive improvement and no mouthwash used. Saltwater won't stop gum disease.

Thanks all for your advice. I will stick to warm salt water rinses and make a dentist apt.

It's the gum around my upper left wisdom tooth, which is partially erupted. Started off feeling like something was stuck between my teeth after a meal. Went to floss (gently) but it bled loads - the area has been sore and there's been a feeling of pressure there too. I'm 34 so unlikely (but not impossible) for wisdom teeth to come through at this age, but I suspected it's a gum infection which is why I tried the Corsodyl.

Sounds like there is something stuck in there. If you can't floss it out go to the dentist before it get worse

Gengigel is good but very expensive. It's not antibacterial but it helps your gums heal.

Piggywaspushed · 01/08/2017 10:08

I'm unfortunately older than you and my tooth is still coming though and causing problems.

In all honesty , Corsodyl is the only thing that worked when I was having the issues you describe above- but it is a v short term measure.

The hygienist told me to power through the bleeding using the toothpick things and keep it clean. the bleeding settles after a week or so of flossing. This did turn out to be true. I got such a lecture from her!

Oh and she did mention gel : there is Corsodyl gel : ask your pharmacist.

Thanks for your advice!
Quick update, I was fortunate enough to get a dentist apt today.
He said there is a gap between my wisdom tooth and molar, and some food had probably got stuck - it's very sore and inflamed.
He used an interdental brush and flushed it through with mouthwash, stung a bit but hopefully it'll be fine now, fingers crossed!
If not I'll have to go back to the dentist to have my wisdom tooth removed.
Thanks again for your advice. I will look into these alternative mouthwashes to use with my scary interdental brush!

Gengigel as mentioned above is good. Also recommend Peroxyl which isn't as vile as Corsodyl although again you shouldn't use it for more than 7 days.

I've got a similar problem with a painful molar and things are slowly improving with use of the TePe brushes and very through daily brushing with an electric toothbrush.

Only1scoop · 03/08/2017 08:56

Hygienist advised me to switch to the Corsodyl daily, tee pee's and a smaller round brush head.
