I've recently discovered that I have low blood sugar. I'm using a freestyle libre monitor as I was worried about being tired and thirsty all the time. My fasting glucose is around 3.5mmol/L, I wake up exhausted, eating carby meals (baked potato with cheese or buckwheat pasta) pick my glucose up as high as 5 briefly, then crash back down to around 3. My GP tells me I have caused this by earing a low carb diet for 3 months, and that I need to eat lots of carbs and sugar. However, I read online that his advice will make it worse and give me type 2 diabetes! If I eat low carb meals (yoghurt or cheese with nuts) my blood sugar never gets above 3.6 to begin with. I feel like a zombie! My overnight glucose is around 3mmol/L and I wake up feeling as though I haven't slept. Has anyone had similar issues and overcome them? If so, please, please advise me. My GP says that as I'm not having seizures or in a coma he's not worried, but I feel like death.

You need to ask for a referral to an endocrinologist. See another GP if no good & if you go to 3 or below and doesn't pick up after 10 mins then present at A&E.

What are you using when in a low to get above 4?

You need bloods to see what your body is doing when you are low? Such as what is the insulin levels when low - there is a condition when you body has too much insulin which makes you go low, that can be transient, heaps of other things this could be as well including reactive hypoglycaemia- but you need a proper investigation.

Rebound lows are dangerous and are going too low overnight so keep monitoring but push for more help/referral.
