Help! Split nail halfway down nail bed.. how to protect/cover?

Whilst chopping up some limes for mojitos I managed to chop into my nail, near the nail bed. As my nails have grown, the side has split and I am now trying hard not to knock it as it is catching and causing me to wince.

What can I use to cover the nail until it's grown out? I had a manicure at the beginning of July (remnants of which you can still see, sorry!) so going by the regrowth I reckon I've got another month at least until I can cut this off. I've tried regular plasters but they keep falling off, when I'm cleaning/washing hands etc.

Anyone else had this and can give me their tips on how to manage this?

Funnily enough I have the exact same problem right now. I'm using finger bandages from Tesco as plasters were no good and if I don't cover it then it catches and it's so sore. You have my sympathy Sad

Ah finger bandages, hadn't even considered those, although that does sound the most obvious solution. I shall take a look, thank you! Hope your nail grows out quickly too Smile

Oh there's a fix you can do with nail glue and paper. Let me find it.

I've done it in the past and it works fairly well. Less bulky than a finger bandage too.

You can use a tea bag.

Cut a tea bag into a square so that it will cover the split, then paint the whole nail with varnish.

You may have to repeat this every 3/4 days, but it does form a strong bond.

Wow! What a great fix, how creative. I'll definitely try that in the short term. Thank you Mouse and Bones.

Brew for you all in honour of this tip!

Years ago I used to have very long natural nails and if I partially broke one I used to layer nail varnish and tissue to fix it until it grew long enough to cut. So paint nail with varnish (clear or coloured) then while still wet put a small piece of tissue on, then varnish, then tissue, finish with varnish. It used to be quite strong and not really noticeable.

Nowadays you could probably just stick on some false nails until it grows a bit.
