Oral Thrush in Babies

Bugsy2 · 20/06/2002 12:25

My DD has had oral thrush (or at least I think that is what it is) for 6 weeks now. She developed this when I had to take antibiotics following her birth and she has been taking Nystan drops and I am applying Daktarin oral gel to her tongue. I am also applying Nystan cream to my nipples - just in case of cross infection, although I don't have any symptoms.
The thrush (a permanent thick white coating on her tongue) shows no sign at all of improving. Any suggestions? Could it be something else? Has anyone elses baby had this and been cured quickly?

Bugsy2 it could be "milk thrush"which is nothing but a milk deposit on the tongue which looks like thrush. Like your DD, DS was diagnosed with thrush at about 6 wks (I, too, had been on antibiotics shortly after the birth) and was put on 2 consecutive courses of Nystan drops which apparently did nothing for the "thrush." The doctor who made the diagnosis was fairly young, and perhaps a little inexperienced. So when I went to the States some weeks later, I took DS to a v. good paediatricianone of those older doctors who has been around for ages and has seen everything. He explained to me that DS had nothing but "milk thrush," which isn't thrush at all, and that to confuse it with actual thrush is an extremely easy error for doctors to make--so he didn't at all blame the original doctor for the misdiagnosis. Maybe your DD's situation is similar?

If it does turn out to be thrush, my paediatrics book says the most effective way to treat it is to smear around the baby's mouth the same thrush cream you would use on yourself (Canestat (sp?)). I have not yet had reason to try the recommendation myself.

Has your Dr/HV taken a swab to look for thrush? It probably wouldn't show up at the moment if you've been treating it for weeks- why not go back to the GP - it sounds as if a trial without all the treatment is indicated at this stage! They can take a swab a few days after treatment is stopped to see if the yeast is still there.

Thank you all. Another swab was taken and there was no fungal bacteria found, so it sounds like it is just a milk deposit on the tongue. My doctor suggested I could scrape DDs tongue very gently if she is not too adverse to it and see how it goes. I've been doing this and it does seem to be improving.
