My hands are so so sore and I still haven't managed to get in at the docs.

I have tried all manor of hand creams but they don't work and everyone keeps telling me it is excema.

They are very very dry, cracked and bleeding and bright red and itchy.

Is there anything I can buy over the counter ?

You should be able to buy aqueous creme over the counter. Not sure about steroid cream - wouldn't have thought so.

chocolateshoes · 26/03/2007 19:51

Have you tried Aveeno. You can get it in Boots or on prescription. It worked brilliantly on DS.

SparklyGothKat · 26/03/2007 19:51

you can buy oilutium (sp??) over the counter, but its a small tube and about £4.

kittypants · 26/03/2007 19:54

is there a lush near you.dream cream is like magic on my ds.

Clodhopper · 26/03/2007 19:56

You can buy 1% hydro cortisone steroid creme over the counter. Aveen o is very good too.

SuzieandSon · 26/03/2007 19:58

I'm horrified that anyone is suggesting you use hydro cortisone on a baby.

Sudocrem - for exema, rashes, everything.

It may make your child look like a mime artist, but it works.

kittypants · 26/03/2007 20:00

its for her(adult) hands isnt it?

SuzieandSon · 26/03/2007 20:02

sorry I didn't realise. But she will be touching her child after using it won't she - and thats not good.

spudmasher · 26/03/2007 20:16

Nuttymuffins, I use eumovate when my hands get really bad. You can get it over the counter and it reminds me of betnovate or elocon in that you wake up and the ezema seems to have disappeared. It works for me because it enables me to get a good nights sleep and my skin can heal.

I think it is quite strong - you can't use it if breast feeding or pregnant. You can only use it for 1 week.

NuttyMuffins · 26/03/2007 20:19

Thanks for all of the replies, have written them all down and will see which I can get.

Just to be clear, it is for adult hands and i'd probably be lathering it on at night so wouldn't be touching kids, although that said 2 of them are on steroid inhalers at the mo anyway.

Go for the eumovate. Don't muck about with emollients. Sounds like you need something stronger than hydrocortinsone too.

NuttyMuffins · 26/03/2007 20:23

Oky doky, will ask for that then.

Cool. it's about six quid though. Forgot to mention that.....

Overtiredmum · 26/03/2007 20:25

Definitely Eumovate!

iris66 · 26/03/2007 20:26

NuttyMuffins - get yourself some washing up gloves whilst you're out too!!!!! - using them has made the single biggest difference to my hands

noonar · 26/03/2007 20:28

try soap free hand wash.

NuttyMuffins · 26/03/2007 20:43

I'll consider £6 cheap if it works, am so sick of having sore hands.

I will get some rubber gloves too, I am terrible at washing up and cleaning with no gloves on.

I don't know if this is possible for you Nuttymuffins, but if you can get more than 6 hours sleep in a row with no interruptions, then apparently your skin heals a lot quicker.

Clodhopper · 26/03/2007 21:37

Eumovate has the same ingredients in as the steroid creme according to my chemist. It's called clobetasone if anyone can be bothered looking it up. Still the same thing though.

Emprexia · 27/03/2007 21:26

Eumovate - DH has had dermatitis and also the dry, cracking, bleeding hands and i have a mild excema and it works.

For the dryness though, you might want to ask your pharmacist for a Aqueous Cream, you can use them to cleanse your hands as well as moisturise and it seems to be doing the trick for DH
