URGENT advice needed about contact lens solution please!

I'm away, and DH was supposed to be joining me this evening, but his flight has been cancelled, and he won't be here until tomorrow.

I managed to bring the wrong contact lens solution with me. I wear soft lenses, and I brought DH's Boston Simplus solution, which says don't use with soft lenses.

I had a spare pair of new lenses that I could use this morning, but was reliant on DH coming out with my solution. By the time we realised that his flight had been cancelled, all the shops here were shut.

So I have a pair that I initially put in the Boston solution last night - I've thrown most of the solution out of my case. And I have my other pair in my eyes.

What do I do?! Do I risk it by going to bed still wearing my lenses? I know that I shouldn't put them in ordinary water. I could boil the kettle (I'm in a hotel room) and use boiled water, but I don't think this is a good idea either. And I don't have any salt to be able to make saline either.

What does the Boston solution to the lenses? I'm assuming that it can't do my eyes any harm, but I'm assuming that it might have damaged my lenses in some way. There's enough of the solution left in my case to still keep them damp.

Help!!!

I would go to bed wearing them. Not ideal and your eyes may feel a little gritty/sticky in the morning but will be fine once you're up and blinked a few times, well hats my experience anyway...I've slept in mine a few times after nights out Blush

Thanks @whirliebird. I may have to do that. Although my eyes are already dry and gritty and I'm not looking forward to it

I would put them in water. Boiled tap water is better than nothing. Clean them thoroughly before using them again.

If you can't see without your lenses, use your specs. If you must, use the lenses that have been in water. Go to a pharmacy or optician and get solution.

BIWI · 21/07/2017 23:34

I haven't got my specs with me! That's part of the problem. I brought a spare pair of lenses, but I'm wearing those and have no other option. I could put in the lenses that I had in the other solution, but if they're damaged, I have nowhere else to put the ones I'm wearing currently.

(And I'm very short sighted so can't managed without my lenses)

I'd try the hotel staff just in case they have any ideas. Failing that can you get emergency replacements tomorrow?

If you have a tiny bit of the old (not boston) solution left to keep them moist they might survive the night in that and revive after a soak tomorrow. From what I remember only the truly shrivelled ones don't recover but it's been a while since I wore them.

LovelyOtherDinosaur · 21/07/2017 23:49

I wouldn't use water at all, even boiled. I think water is a big no due to the bacteria that forms from it standing.

Have you asked at reception at your hotel? Someone may just happen to have a bottle of solution

BIWI · 21/07/2017 23:55

It's a fancy pants boutique hotel with no reception after 9pm.

I don't have any leftover solution.

DH will be here tomorrow and/or I can find an optician - tomorrow isn't the issue - it's what I do now! I'm trying going to bed wearing them.

Do not use any water of any sort. Please.

MikeUniformMike · 22/07/2017 00:08

Wear them. Your old lenses might be fine when cleaned and soaked but I would advise caution. In future, you may want to get single use/daily contact lenses for your holiday. You would need to take spares.

If you are in the UK, you could contact your optician for a copy of your prescription and order on line, or get some cheap specs or sunglasses made up locally. Enjoy your holiday.

Can you get to a 24hr supermarket and get some saline?

(And I hate to say it but why would you not take your glasses?)

BIWI · 22/07/2017 08:34

I'm fine. I slept in them and not a drop of water touched them.

No 24 hour supermarkets here!

I didn't take my glasses because a) I hate wearing them and so never do - despite the fact that I always carry them in my handbag, b) I had a spare pair of lenses, which I always take with me when I travel anywhere, (because I wear monthly disposables) and c) I was travelling Easy Jet, which meant having to take only a small handbag, so I could get it into my hand luggage. In the process of transferring all my stuff from my main, large handbag, I forgot to put my glasses in my carry-on luggage.

I've been wearing lenses for 30 years, and this is the first time this has happened to me, so it's not like I'm some lazy, chaotic person! Which is also why I didn't know what to do in this eventuality.

Anyway, thanks for trying to help me.
