Hi,

I wasn't sure where to post this but I need advice about my hearing. I was born stone deaf (nerve deafness) in my left ear due to my mother having a bad asthma attack during delivery. My right ear has always been normal, although I have not had a hearing test in many years.

My hearing problem wasn't noticed by my parents and it was the routine school check at 5 years old when it was discovered. I guess I was very good at not showing it as I had never know any different.

I was sent for regular hearing checks (for my good ear) throughout my school years and everything was fine with my good ear and I was discharged at 18. I am now 45 and starting to notice I am struggling to hear things more than normal. Do I need to see a GP to arrange a hearing test? Will I need one at the hospital? If they find a problem would I benefit from a hearing aid?

They didn't do newborn hearing checks when I was born in 1972. Hence, why it wasn't picked up.

I am too though I have some hearing in the bad ear but can't hear speech. Mine was through a virus aged 12. I am struggling too of late (46 now) so am following with interest as i was told in the 80s I'd not benefit from hearing aids

Born in mid 80's and had mumps as a baby which left me deaf in one ear. So far I have good hearing in my left ear. But I am screwed if there is a lot of background noise

I have no hearing in one ear and slightly reduced in the other through my mother having an illness whilst carrying me. I had hearing aids as a child but the audiology department decided while I was still in primary school to give up on them because they caused me more distress than the benefits were worth. I'm only 33 now and I'm still ok without hearing aids but if I needed them now I wouldn't hesitate the technology has moved on significantly. I would just go to your GP and start from there. You may decide ultimately to go private to buy the hearing aids to get the best/most discreet available.

I got meningitis at 2

As a result I have no hearing at all in my right ear and only 30% hearing in my left.

You do need to get in with an audiologist

Your deaf ear won't be given a hearing aid. I've only got one despite being severely deaf. No point putting one in an ear you can't hear from

But no harm in getting officially checked and registered

My dad has single ear deafness from meningitis age 2yo (only the best people, right Soubriquet?!). I think he'd get his good ear checked out if it was fading.

I'd be interested in how you get on. My deafness was discovered after a bout of mumps when I started school. It is very one sided ( 70%+ loss) but not been tested since I was about 12 when I stopped cooperating Blush noticed a deterioration when mobile phones were used at work and also get inflammation and itching in outer ear now.
