Ewwww! Teeny tiny horse fly bit me about 5 days ago, it didn't notice until I felt the sting and brushed it off but it had already had a good feed on me. I don't react much to mozzies but my body really hates horseflies.

I've diligently used anthisan and haven't scratched, but LOOK AT IT! It's on my forearm, the welt is about 6mm across (bigger than the bloody fly). I've got another one on my leg from the same day and a much bigger fly, given the blood that was on it, but it doesn't look like this one...any tips to avoid it going really manky?

They are evil things. I got bitten five times about 10 days ago and one of the reactions to the bites was 3 inches across and really swollen. The pharmacist advised topical anthistamine and an oral antihistamine as well eg Piriton or Piriteze. To be honest that looks OK at the moment and I would just keep an eye on redness around it and any tracking from the inflammation.

They seem very prevalent and particularly persistent this year - and they like my blood! I was more bothered about the one on my leg as I know they can turn nasty and infected, I have really resisted scratching so as not to aggravate it and push the fly spit around.

This one looked like a small burn with no welt until yesterday. Damn things!

Ouch!! Though I'm on holiday in Cape Verde and been bitten by bloody mosquitos and o e bite is tiny but the whelt it's causing is about 10cm
I'd post a picture if I knew how to 😂

The welty white bit on mine kept coming up for nearly a week after a shower or when I got hot walking. I was even wearing insect repellent. I'm now investigating insect repellent trousers!

I've been walking the dog and watering the garden in long jeans and long sleeved top ever since, swearing me tits off in humid weather just to avoid the little bastards.

Sweating, not swearing...although I do swear my tits off on occasion.

It looks ok at the minute. That's exactly how I react to mozzies Sad and I seem to be very attractive to the things! Keep resisting the urge to scratch!

I was bitten the other day -twice in the same place. It swelled up like a massive blister, made the whole arm tingle and itched, itched, itched!

I rubbed Rosemary oil onto it and the surrounding area and 3 days later, it's gone all bar a faint red mark. It stopped the itching in its tracks, also the tingling. Absolutely brilliant!

This is it - on my arm just above the wrist.

I had an infected one of these a few weeks ago!
Horrible things.

CobblersandHogwash · 19/07/2017 13:56

I had to have my wedding and engagement rings cut off the other day in A&E because of a horse fly bite on my finger.

Whole hand swelled up so you couldn't see my knuckles and my ring finger went purple like an aubergine.

The nurse moved very quickly to cut the rings off!

I loathe horse flies. And the poor horses who are hounded by the them all the time.

BillyDaveysDaughter · 19/07/2017 15:04

Rosemary oil?! Wow, who knew.

Yes I am quite anxious for it NOT to get infected, as they so frequently do...just trying to avoid scratching or touching it as much as possible. Bloody creatures, I only got one or two minor bites in the whole time I kept horses, but now I don't and I've been bitten simply minding my own business in a field or in the garden!
