MMR before or after holiday?? Dilemma time....

DS has appointment for his MMR tomorrow. We go away on holiday to France in 2 weeks. Shall I let him have it and rest assured that he will have some protection against measles/mumps and rubella as the incidence is rising nationally, but run the risk of a reaction when we're travelling....or shall I wait until we get back and take a chance?
Why are decisions like this never easy??!! What would you do?? I need some answers before tomorrow please.......!!

ps don't want to turn it into a MMR argument - just wanted to bend your ears a bit - any help gratefully received, thanks.

You're going the same day as us Galaxy!

I would give it to him before you go. It's still 2 weeks away and at least he'd be protected away from home in case you did come across any infectious kids

I'd wait. In fact I waited with DS2 until he was 18 months old.

Chandra · 13/07/2004 15:40

If there is still 2 weeks to go, I would go ahead with the vacine, if it was less than a week... I would wait.

I suppose that I am woried - selfishly I know - about him having a reaction whilst we travel. Can't remember exactly with DD but it is about 14 days later isn't it? HV said raised temp up to 10 days after which sounds fine, but I do naturally ignore her textbook advice......!!oops

Gut reaction is to wait, he's technically late now at 14.5 months so an other 2 weeks will not make any difference hopefully?!!

I waited until after our holiday with ds who was roughly the same age. In fact he didn't have it until around 17 months in the end.

emmatmg · 13/07/2004 16:21

Spoke to nurse at surgery the other day about this and she said wait until after the holiday as the reaction can take up to 3 weeks to come out.
I've been trying to get DS2 done for soooo long now but every time I've booked it he's been ill and he's 3 now!!!!! It's been booked and cancelled about 6 times.

irishjewels · 13/07/2004 16:23

I have spoken at length with gp regarding mmr as ds is allergic to eggs and mmr is somehow related to eggs. Medical opinion is that a raised temperature is much more severe and common with 3in1 than mmr. and also that any adverse reaction to mmr is likely to occur more or less immediately or in the 24hrs following the jab. I would recommend before hols, especially as you are travelling abroad and in warm weather, sharing swimming pools and other facilities.

PS enjoy your holiday

poppyseed · 13/07/2004 16:24

Looking like I'll wait then.... Told you I usually ignore the HV!!

oops just read emmatmg's thread seems we got some very different advice! maybe mine was just the allergic reaction advice and not a general reaction to the mmr itself as i understood at the time - sorry

poppyseed · 13/07/2004 16:27

irishjewels -we cross posted and you've got me thinking again now.... Just remember back to DD 5 years ago who was quite poorly afterwards with rash, diarrohea, temp... GP said at the time it was possible to be the jab or it could have been Scarletina......Really don't want the same with DS when away from home....

and again!!

If he's only 14 months you're better off waiting. It;s more likely to work (the measles bit) the longer you leave it and the closer you get to 18 months anyway. They never used to count MMR jabs that had been given before 15 months as definfitely conferring immunity as so many failed. Not sure why they've changed the dates in the last few years.

strawberry · 13/07/2004 18:10

The most common time for an adverse reaction is after about a week and may last 2-3 days (this is from BNF - the drug book doctors use). HTH.

BigBird · 13/07/2004 18:23

I'd wait - dd got mini rubella after 6 weeks. 2 weeks wont make much difference...

poppyseed · 13/07/2004 20:16

Interesting info jimjams....Will wait for sure thanks all..

Thought that I would add he's having it tomorrow! Nearly 17 months and I feel apprehensive about it but I can't understand why as I was fine with DD. Shall put it down to momentary madness and be big and brave in the morning with him.
