Blocked ears - scared of syringing!

BrollyDolly · 17/07/2017 11:46

I've always had problems with my ears since I was young. Started off with lots of ear infections and since then it feels like my ears overproduce ear wax. I haven't used cotton buds in them for a long time as I am aware of the dangers. I use olive oil or bicarbonate ear drops regularly especially when they feel unbearably blocked but it never feels completely unblocked. I'm paranoid my ears look unclean and can just about tolerate a doctor looking in with the instrument but am petrified of having them syringed.
Is there any other way of safely trying to unblock them?
Getting really fed up !

Just man up and get them done at the drs by the nurse. It's fine. You need to see the dr anyway and not assume it's wax. It could be a hearing problem that needs sorting.

Not really no. My DD has to have her ears regularly syringed because of recurrent infections.

It's done in a hospital environment with trained aural care nurses who can do this procedure blindfolded (they dont by the way). They're also very good with DD.

Please go docs and get a proper referral sorted. It was only after DD was referred here they discovered she had hearing loss. Sad

Ive had it done. I really enjoyed it!! Plus you get to hear properly afterwards! Always a bonus 😉

I found it quite a relaxing sensation, weirdly!

Ginger782 · 18/07/2017 22:55

I'm jealous you need your ears syringed. It feels amazing. So good. Seriously.

Viviennemary · 18/07/2017 22:58

The bicarbonate of soda eardrops are really good. Better than oil I think. But I agree go to your GP. If the wax is soft then it won't hurt. It's not a bad experience at all and the end result is you can hear. don't put it off any longer.

My son has a high wax build up and regularly has microsuction done on his. He calls it having his ears hoovered! He has it done at the hospital but he have paid £60 to have it done privately before.

YellowLawn · 18/07/2017 23:00

look up an ear clear clinic.
it's private but not hugely expensive.
they use suction to clear your ear and take a good look, so can give you a letter to take to gp in case something isn't ideal with your ears.

I had to get mine done a few times as a child. It's amazing. And afterwards everything is so loud. You'll be fine.

InvisableLobstee · 19/07/2017 08:16

I agree having your ears syringed is quite nice. It's not actually a syringe they pump in warm water with a little pump thing. If your ear is not very sore and you have softened the wax previously with drops as instructed it should not hurt . Even if you don't normally like getting water in your ears this feels different and not uncomfortable. Plus I found a sporny satisfaction in seeing the massive ball of wax that came out of my ear, no wonder I was deaf!

I went to a Clear Ear clinic yesterday - both ears hoovered and checked - best £80 I've spent in ages. Painless, no oil needed in advance - blissfully good hearing in 10 mins...

I was nervous but honestly don't be it actually feels nice. Just warm water, doesn't hurt and such a relief.
