Resting heart rate can indicate future health?

Just read an interesting article from Harvard Medical School: www.health.harvard.edu/blog/resting-heart-rate-can-reflect-current-future-health-201606179806

TLDR: having a resting heartrate at the higher end of the 60-100bpm 'normal' scale can be indicative that your heart is having to work harder and can indicate increased future risk of heart disease.

Just took ours whilst lying in bed, mine was 56 (do a lot of running) but DH's was 88 which was a bit worrying as he is overweight. I didn't tell DH why I was measuring - just said I was curious. But probably good that we've got a bit of a health kick planned from tomorrow...

I want to know what the up to date risk ratio is for the athletes compared to general population

Not so much a 'risk' per say, it depends on symptoms, if there are none no need for a PM, it's also usually the simplest form of pacing (there are many and varied ways to pace a heart, reprogramming is done at outpatients with what is basically a magnet).

But AF, as you should know if you are a med student, is a different thing, although often associated with enlarged atria.

Have you seen the research on CFAE?

Have AF though and take a low dose beta blocker.

LOL, well of course you have a low resting HR, I was going to suggest you saw a Dr before you said that.

Beta blockers have the affect of lowering HR but the effect of increasing the contraction so the heart is beating slower but pumping more blood out with each beat.

That's called 'white coat hypertension' - quite common, people are nervous around Drs so the body responds.

Mine is 80-90. I regularly run, and do sports. am a healthy weight. Only thing I could improve on health wise is drinking less alcohol. I have about 20 units per week.
