Exhaustion from light exercise - what could cause this?

Junglefowl · 15/07/2017 22:27

I saw a doctor to discuss chronic fatigue and he didn't think I have it. I am just so keen to know what is limiting me though, as any physical effort takes HUge amounts out of me.
If I can ever get to sit or lie down I can feel normal, it's just when I need to walk (not even very far) that my whole body starts to struggle.

If anyone has any thoughts I'd be really interested as giving up on ever knowing. The doctor has done some blood tests so maybe this could give a clue when results come.

Thanks if any ideas as I'd really appreciate it

I measured my heart rate this morning out of interest and got 78 lying down and 134 immediately when I stood up. Confused Could this indicate POTS?

CFSKate · 24/07/2017 11:06

Junglefowl - which is better/worse for you - standing still like in a queue, or walking? Or both equally bad?

Okite - Post-Exertional Malaise is considered a hallmark feature of ME/CFS.

Thanks kate I'll discuss with my GP tomorrow.

Junglefowl · 24/07/2017 17:47

I find exercise eg a brisk walk the main problem. Just standing isn't as much an issue although if I let myself I'd love just lying down !

I often come back to wondering if I have Lyme disease socthis discussion is so helpful that other things cause post exertional malaise

Kate the doctor thought i don't have CfS as I tolerate alcohol well plus have no trauma in my past which he said his patients with it almost always do.

Junglefowl - most people with ME/CFS don't do well with alcohol. And I'd say most people with ME/CFS find walking easier than standing still.

That's a really interesting article CFSKate. I can easily walk long distances, but can only stand comfortably for a few minutes.

Is there anything I can do while standing to help blood flow?

I also get times when I'm exceptionally tired. Blood test said low iron so I take the tablets when I really need them, but they make me constipated so I have to find the right balance with them.

Hyperventing · 25/07/2017 04:36

Have you been checked for Lyme disease (caused by tick bites)? That's another thing that can cause exhaustion. Especially likely if you walk regularly in parks/countryside.

Hyperventing · 25/07/2017 04:37

Sorry, just saw you mentioned that upthread!

I have had a bit of a journey with chronic pain/autoimmune problems so thought I'd share in case it helps you although very long!

I had chronic pain and chronic fatigue symptoms for several years. All tests at Dr came back normal. My GP and physio suspected fibromyalgia but this was discounted by a rheumatology consultant. Dr and Rhuematologist suggested various drugs to help with pain/sleep but I wasn't keen on a lifetime dependent on pharmaceuticals. In desperation I looked away from mainstream medicine. Firstly I joined Tumeric user group uk on Facebook and started taking their Golden Paste recipe. It helped with the paintremendously and I felt it was better than taking continual ibuprofen etc round the clock. However I felt this was just a sticking plaster masking the underlying issues that no one could seem to diagnose.

Eventually I came across a condition called adrenal fatigue which isn't really recognised here in the uk but is in many other countries. It just had all the symptoms that I was experiencing. Some more research provided advice that if you think you have AF you should see a clinical nutritionist asap. The clinical bit is important a regular nutritionist is unlikely to be the right person to see.

So I found a local ex-NHS CN for a consultation. At one point she said she loved people like me "because I'm such a textbook case" how I loved to hear that. Somebody found me textbook❤️❤️

So this is where it may help you OP. My problems all stemmed from decimated gut bacteria caused by the use of too many antibiotics and stress. (Poor diet, too much sugar, processed foods etc also adds to these problems though I've always eaten pretty well so didn't really apply in my case).

As a child my mother would have us on anti biotics frequently, i also had a very traumatic childhood all of which can add to stress in the gut. Later in life due to repeated cases of cystitis I was also put on a three month course of antibiotics. I was very prone to food poisoning also and would pick it up v easily on holidays etc.

So I had to do some unpleasant tests to analyse my gut bacteria flora and sure enough it was decimated and I also had a nasty food positing bug called helicobacter pylori living in my gut!

So when gut bacteria is decimated bad bacteria in the gut thrives, this invades tissues in the body and can manifest itself in multiple ways, chronic pain, fatigue, eczema etc. The CN estimates that the vast majorly of inexplicable autoimmune symptoms are due to issues with gut flora and there an increasing body of medical research to support this (the map my gut study is a good place to start).

Furthermore and this is the bit if find most interesting new research has shown that not only does bad bacteria affect our tissues it actually gets to our DNA. We all have patches on our DNA that can expose us to intolerances and allergies. They are either present in our DNA or they are not. But bacteria can actually get to the DNA and activate these intolerances! My CN suspected I'd developed gluten and dairy intolerances and gave me the option to send a DNA sample to the university of Toronto for analysis. I duly did and the results came back positive for both. It also highlighted various vitamin deficiencies in my Genetic makeup

So I have been prescribed a course of adrenal repair supplants, gut cleansing plus pre and pro biotics, and particular supplemt to address my vitamin imbalances and I feel I am about 95% cured at present. I have also had to adopt a low gluten/low dairy diet.

Sorry for longest post ever but if it helps you or one other person I thought it worthwhile! 😁

helsybells · 25/07/2017 05:23

Also just to add the invasion of bad bacteria in to the tissues gradually seeps through the body it affects whole organs such as liver kidneys etc and when it affrects the adrenal glands which are very closely related to thyroid function it can therefore affect thyroid and hormone levels. So again anyone with an inexplicable thyroid ir hormone issue might be well placed to investigate further down this line...

BestZebbie · 25/07/2017 05:26

Hyperparathyroidism (which is NOT the Thyroid). Does sound more like POTS though.

Junglefowl · 25/07/2017 13:42

helsybells thank you so much for sharing that and for everyone else's contributions too, this has been an amazing thread for me and I am grateful to not only feel less alone but to have several really positive leads as it's been easy to give up when doctors can't find an answer.

helsy would you be happy to recommend your CN by Pm in case anywhere near me?
Funnily enough my mum has wondered whether my gut is at the bottom of this

Have PMd you! :)

Wobblyheart · 27/04/2023 19:13

@Junglefowl i know it’s a really old post, just wondered whether you ever got to the bottom of your problems?

Junglefowl · 27/04/2023 22:21

wobblyheart I hope you are ok and not suffering as I was as I had many very difficult years with this . Happily I am incomparably better now, I can go on walks (not like I used to but still a huge improvement ) and I even had another baby at 41 and have near normal energy levels.
i still don’t know for sure what helped and it’s been gradual but in case it helps I think these all helped:
i saw a hypnotherapist as a last resort when got desperate ! who discovered I did in fact have deep trauma (from boarding school too young. I didn’t even think this could matter ). This was definitely something that seemed to start a strong recovery and I know the doctor I saw stressed the link between trauma triggering a physical change and chronic fatigue years later.
i took probiotics and made kefir for a while
I took a good bio available multi vitamin
and lastly , and miraculously, during my last pregnancy my food intolerances seemed to Vanish for good which has been just so liberating and an amazing extra bonus . So I wonder if that side was related to hormones or what on earth it was ?
i do wish I knew what was behind my fatigue for sure , and do be encouraged it lifted as I was so fearful it never would .
