Diagnosis of excema in a 2 yr old

My 2 yr old DD has today been diagnosed by the emergency doctor with excema. She's come up in a rash this week which started as a big ugly red patch behind her knee and has spread to lots of little bumps all over her legs and arms. They started red and angry looking - now they're purple and appear to be going down.
I'm a bit miffed with the Dr as he was unhelpful to say the least. However, am relieved it's nothing more serious. I have no experience in this area but know from "lurking" that a lot of kids of MNers have excema.
I have no idea how to treat this long term. She's been prescribed with a hydrocortisone cream which I'm applying x2 a day. Should I be eliminating things from her diet to figure out the cause? Should I stop using her cream (E45 currently) and bath stuff (Mr Men!)?
I'm off to bed now but would appreciate any help from the more experienced among you with any pearls of wisdom

cool cashncarry, i would love to visit T&T, especially tobago.

saadia, any 'soap' has a drying effect. aveeno lotion 2x a day or even more often. dd's face only cleared up after putting aveeno on 4x a day. and always the aveeno and then the hydrocortisone if there is a flareup. if no flare up aveeno everyday anyway.

rowan, moisturise first, then the cortisone cream or ointment on top. keep applying the hydrocortisone after all redness has disappeared. if it keeps coming back after a day or 2 reapply again. always moisturise.

a stubborn patch takes longer to clear up than a small patch there for a day or 2.

and yes hydrocortisone can be used on the face. the problem with thinning skin happened in earlier times because the strength of the creams and ointments were higher. they don't make them in those dosages anymore because it has been found to be just as effective in lower dosages.

btw, hydrocortisone is in the same family of drugs as birth control pills. in the 60's and 70's, like hydrocortisone creams, the dosages were higher. later on they found out taht lower dosages were also just as effective and less unwanted symptoms too.

Wow - thanks for all the great input on my thread guys. The great MN strikes again

Have made an appt for DD to see her normal GP now - 2 wks time was earliest appt Definitely feel like I'm armed with the latest advice in case I get fobbed off.

Rowan1971 - not hijacking at all it's useful to see that someone else is going through the exact same problem. Hope it all works out.

Tooticky - the GP I'm going to see is also a homeopath so I will ask her about alternative remedies. Thanks for the heads up!
