Referral to a Gynaecologist?

Hi I hope someone can help!

History is that I have had one successful pregnancy resulting in emergency c- section Oct 2004, and then one ectopic Sept 2006.

Since the ectopic I have had problems with my periods. They have been regular but from about day 15 to 28 I have had reddish/brownish discharge which is enough that I need to change panty liners 2/3 times a day. I also suffer from pain in the kidney area and under my ribs at the same time.

GP seems to be unconcerned and fobs me off with lets see what happens next month. However I have now moved so have had to move doctor. Am going to see my new GP in about 10 days and am hoping that he will be more sympathetic, but think that I need to be more forceful.

Can I insist on seeing a Gynae? If so, how do you pick one? Can anyone recommend one? We are ttc again and really want this to be resolved as soon as possible.

Thanks for getting this far and thanks for any advice!

Bellie

Hi Bellie,

Hopefully your new GP will refer you to a gynae; if not I would insist to this person that you are referred to a gynae as a matter of course. If you have private health insurance you can see a gynae at a private hospital. Alternatively you can ask the GP if you can see a gynae as a private patient and you will pay to be seen by such.

The sort of problem that you are having is certainly serious enough to warrant further investigation.

Another thing I would suggest you do if you do not already do this is to keep a symptom diary daily. Make notes of all symptoms suffered and show this to the gynae when you get to see him.

HTH and good luck. Be assertive and don't be fobbed off!!!.

Thanks Attila

I have been keeping a diary for the last 2 months as I thought this might help with the new GP so will keep doing it.

Does it matter which Gynae I see or should I be asking for one by name? (I did see one after my ectopic) but she was not very helpful either )

Thanks for the support and the advice though!

Whereabouts in the country are you, you may be able to get some recommendations? Bear in mind you are entitled to a choice of four services now (despite what your GP may say!)

Bellie - I have known a lovely man called Yunus Tayob since 15 years ago when he performed a hysterectomy on my Mum. I saw him myself with gynae problems about 14 years ago, then he was my consultant for both my pregnancies.

I've recently been back to him again for hysteroscopy, polypectomy & endometrial ablation.

I Googled his name recently and several other gynaecologists included working for him in their cv.

He does work in the nhs, but also privately.

I saw him at BUPA Harpenden following referral by my GP, but I imagine you could book a private consultation yourself. Worth a try, anyhow. You could e-mail his Secretary to ask - [email protected]

I think Bupa will want a referral from a GP as well.

Thanks fortyplus - will definately try this. I just feel so 'adrift' at the moment that I want to try and take some control myself - iyswim
