Dentist recommended brace for overbite - necessary or not?

I've had an overbite from thumb sucking as a child.

I'm now in my 40's and back from seeing a new dentist - he asked if I've ever thought about getting fixed braces to correct it. He said he'd recommend it as my bite is putting all the pressure on my back teeth and as a result the front teeth are moving forward more.

Does this sound correct? None of my previous dentists have every mentioned it.

I think he could absolutely be right. An overbite can cause serious problems including TMJ because of the pressure on the joints of your jaw. Get a second opinion from an orthodontist.

Thanks - I don't have any jaw problems atm but do notice that I clench my jaw quite a bit.
Either way, I don't have the £'s to correct it.
