This is the third year in a row that I have had a very productive cough for most of May and June, it is tailing off now.

I have no sore throat or raised temperature but the cough and colourless mucus production in the middle 3-4 weeks is really excessive to the point where I have to sleep upright in a chair in order to breathe and first thing in the morning and in the evening it is very hard to catch my breath .

I am guessing by the timing that it is hayfever related but other than slightly itchy eyes I have no other symptoms.

I have avoided going to the doctor with it as I had some extensive medical problems a few years ago and I feel guilty that I have used up more than my share of the NHS but after some nagging from family and friends I booked an appointment a few weeks ago, the first available one that I could get to without letting down work is this coming Wednesday but I am feeling loads better now, there is still a slight cough but nothing significant.

Do I go on Wednesday or do I cancel and promise my loved ones that I will see a doctor in May next year if it comes back again?

GP will only treat what they see as a rule, so if they don't see you present with the exact problem they won't offer very much.

Did you try talking to a pharmacist, to see if treatment for hayfever would help? Is it possible something else is causing an allergic response, like a cat?

That's what I was thinking. I have been trying over the counter antihistamines daily in the hope they would help but I haven't noticed any change to the cough.

I think I will cancel then go back next year if it manifests again.

Sorry, no cat, only a hamster but he wasn't here the first year and he is in the living room all year around.

I'd go to the doctor if it was me. If you already have health issues then you can't be too careful.
