Reflux baby

Hi mums

Anyone else out there who has a baby with reflux? My baby, who is now almost four months old, was diagnosed with reflux in January. Having a baby with reflux (silent reflux in his case) has been a really difficult experience - it's been so awful to see my little baby in so much pain and discomfort. I am a new mum and it's been a really steep learning curve!
Here's my story: At about two weeks old my baby became incredibly alert and would constantly arch his back. I became increasingly alarmed at his behaviour but was reassured by the midwife that he was just a very active baby. I managed to continue breastfeeding him, although he was such a fussy, squirmy feeder and put on very little weight. He hardly ever slept and cried loads and loads. A month went by and after numerous visits to the doctor and hospitalisation over the new year, my baby was diagnosed with silent reflux and referred to a gastro peadiatrician. He was prescribed gaviscon (which seemed to work for a while), then ranitidine, domperidone, and finally losec which he is currently taking. It seemed such a shame - I wanted to feed him naturally yet he was on all these artificial medicinces. I decided to explore complimentary medicince and he has also been treated by a cranial osteopath which definitely helped to improve his condition.
Then I researched reflux on the internet and found links with cows milk allergy. I have been on a completely dairy-free diet for two months, difficult because I love cheese and milk, but happy to do it for my baby. Interestingly, I was absolutely addicited to milk when I was pregnant and the baby constantly had hiccups in the womb.
There were many times, and there still are - when i wanted to give up breastfeeding altogether, and wonder whether the baby might have had less reflux on hypoallergenic formla milk, but I have been advised that breast is best and I try to cling on to that belief.
Am now at the stage - finally - where my baby will sleep in his cot if it's elevated (he slept in the moses basket only a handful of times when he was newborn), but he is still a terrible feeder (he feeds for 8 - 10 mins on average per feed) and sleeper, with little in the way of a day or night time pattern.
He's such a lovely, cheerful baby when he's not feeling ill and at times we get glimpses of the baby he could be without the reflux. He had an immunisation jab today and hardly cried - the pain is so minor compared to what he's been through already in his little life so far!
Would really love to hear from other mums who have had or are having a similar experience. If anyone is reading this and relates to what I've written it would be great to hear from you - although I totally understand that there's hardly any time to do anything let alone go on the mumsnet page when you've got a reflux baby!

Hi hippydippy, you're actually doing well in that your baby's reflux has been diagnosed relatively quickly and your are getting medical support. It took me almost 6 months to get taken seriously that my baby has reflux, by which time she had acid burn on her face because she was bringing up so much stomach acid.

Dd always seemed uncomfortable after feeds, but things got noticeably bad when I had to stop bf at 6 weeks - I had internal thrush and the pain during and after feeding her was blowing my mind, to the extent I had started to dread feeding her. My gp would not prescribe me the unlicensed systemic anti-fungal that can be used when bf. Dd started of with infacol in her formula, because my hv was adamant it was just wind, even though dd was arching her back in discomfort and projectile vomiting. That didn't help any so we progressed to colief, which did help because it partially digests the milk, but when she came off that because it's not recommended to continue it beyond 3 months, the reflux got worse and worse, to the extent that her face around her mouth and chin was red and sore with the acid she was bringing up. She was sick after every meal, every time I led her down, and frequently was sick before her next feed. I persuaded my gp to prescribe gaviscon in January, which really helped. But then my hv saw the light when I mentioned that cheese made dd violently sick when I started introducing solids. So the gp prescribed nutramigen hypoallergenic formula, and is no longer bringing up acid, and rarely vomits now without the need for gaviscon or anything else. The effect of it was virtually instant - within 2 feeds she stopped bringing up acid. Dd has an appointment with a dietician next week for further assessment and for advice on her diet through weaning and beyond.

Is your baby taking expressed milk from a bottle? If he is, then it may be worth trying a couple of small feeds of a hypoallergenic formula to see how he copes with it. I know how heart wrenching it is to stop bf before you feel you want to, but it may be worth seeing if the hypoallergenic formula helps. But you must go with your own feelings on that. I believe that it is possible for a baby to be sensitive to the milk proteins and/or sugars in breast milk. So far I have been told that there are no tests that can be done to pinpoint the exact cause of an intolerance, it is assessed through careful changes to diet, so the only way to see if hypoallergenic formula helps is to try it. I can only say that the difference it has made to dd is phenomenal. Would I have tried if I was still bf? I honestly can't answer that question.

Incidentally, if you decide to the hypoallergenic formula, see if you can get it on prescription: nutramigen is £12.50 for a 400g tub, which at the moment lasts dd 3 days.

oops, it is dd not the gp who is no longer bringing up acid!

Hi Roskva

Good to hear from you. Sounds like you've had a hard time of it - is this your first baby?? It's awful when you know instinctively that something is wrong but everyone else tells you that you're wrong or just making a fuss! I was also advised to give my baby infacol at first, to absolutely no effect whatsoever, and if anything it just made the feeds even more stressful than they were already!
About a month ago my regular HV was o holiday and her replacement advised me to try nutramigen but my baby just will NOT drink from a bottle. My partner and I have tried feeding him when he's sleepy, when he's awake, at home, out and about but he just gets in a state and chokes. I've bought every different teat and bottle on the market but no joy. I've really wanted to try bottle feeding Nutramigen because of his slow weight gain and fussy feeding but it's been impossible. I'm also worried that I've missed the window for bottle feeding which I've been told is 7 - 8 weeks old. Do you think I should persevere?? Any tips on how to get him to bottle feed at nearly four months??
Also, how did you find out about your dietician? Was he/she referred by the doc?

Hi Hippy - not sure if you know but you posted this twice so a couple of us have responded on your other post

hippydippy · 24/03/2007 22:14

Another thing I forgot to mention is that my baby has developed a really hacking chesty cough - I'm not sure whether this is due to a cold or another symptom of the reflux. It seems to be worse after he's just fed, or if he lies down flat not long after feeding. He's had it for about a week - had anything similar with your baby??

hippydippy am on my second reflux baby. DD1 is 15mths now and had quite severe reflux along with numerous other problems. So she was under the hospital for her reflux but by 11mths she had stopped being in so much pain. I didnt breastfeed due to other problems so she ended up on Enfamil AR which did work wonders for her but she still occasionally gets bouts of throwing up. DD2 is now 11wks and from birth we recognised the symptoms. She was put onto gaviscon which seemed to help but the last week she has been throwing up again etc but has also been full of cold so am waiting to see which it is causing the problems. Both girls have been watched for weight gain due to going from 50th to 9th centiles. Although looking at chunky DD1 now I know not to worry with DD2

Hi Nemo
Your message is reassuring! can't wait for my baby to get over this but seems a shame that I'm wishing this time away! x

Mums reading this thread
Any advice on my previous message re bottle feeding a four month old? Am keen to introduce hypoallergenic formula alongside bf to try and bring the baby's weight up but he is refusing the bottle. Have I left it too late??

Dd is my first baby, hippydippy. Have you tried cup feeding? I started giving dd water from a cup at 3 months. It is a very messy exercise, and quite a lot goes down her front, but it may work. I find these cups \linl{http://www.bloomingmarvellous.co.uk/product.aspx?CategoryID=n_at_home&ProductID=BB770_BB771&language=en-GB\here} help - my hv gave me a couple of them, so ask yours about them. It was my hv who got me the appointment with the dietician - apparently she doesn't have the authority to make a referral to paediatrics, but she can refer to the dietician.
