Ds (8 mth) has managed to scratch his eye, can see the scratch quite clearly and is on his iris (if that right, mean the coloured part) the white of his eye is red, do i need to do anything? or will it just heal on its own?

TIA

not sure, but my dd1 has scratched my dh's eye at least 3 times leaving a red mark each time. it takes a long time but it slowly disappears.

MorocconOil · 23/03/2007 21:46

DS had his iris scratched age 5. We took him to A&E and he was given eyedrops and an eye patch for a week. We were advised to keep him off school for 3 days incase he was knocked.

PestoEasterMonster · 23/03/2007 21:47

DD2 did this to me when she was 2, by poking her finger into my eye, when I already had a contact lens in. It scratched the surface of the retina. You must get it checked out. We were directed to our local eye hospital and I had to have special drops to sort it out. Contact your doctors and they should refer you. Good luck!

So what you guys think? is it bad enough to get him out of bed tonight and take him?

Pucca, the cornea can heal very quickly but I'm afraid I would agree with others that he does need to go to A and E. Better to try to prevent a corneal infection, than have to deal with it in a baby.

pucca · 24/03/2007 08:34

Have rang NHS direct, but they are apparently extremely busy and only dealing with urgent cases. So not sure what to do now tbh, there isn't a minor injuries clinic/walk in clinic in the area. Would free a bit ott to go to A&E, so not sure what to do now.

Go to A & E. They won't mind. Better that than it getting infected because you left it. Good luck (& take something to keep you both amused whilst you wait)

pucca · 24/03/2007 20:35

Just to let you all know.

I did take him to A&E and they gave me some drops to use for 4 days, think he has caught a cold form dd now though as he is burning up terribly and not a happy bunny at all, have given him some medised but i think i am in for a rough night.

Thanks again everyone for all the advice.

Poor pucca! Well, at least you got the drops. I was thinking about you last night!

MorocconOil · 25/03/2007 08:18

Glad to hear you got it sorted. Hope last night wasn't too bad.

Well done for braving A & E. Now his eye will start to recover. Sorry to hear he's now going down with something else. Keep him dosed up and keep an eye on him. Good Luck!
