Taking prebiotics to help with sleep

Anyone tried this?

After seeing the Michael Mosley programme on this I have been trying it for a few weeks. I think I've been sleeping generally better - but still have really bad nights about twice a week. And can't honestly say it's the prebiotic powder, it could all be stress-related. Plus the prebiotics seem to have an unpleasantly flatulent affect.

Anyone got any useful experience or insight to share?

Placebo effect is great.

Maybe ask a Dr if you intend to take probiotics every night, though.

I asked a dietician, who said the research is not advanced enough yet - TV programmes usually get there first then research follows later on. And that it would make me flatulent! Which is not surprising as it's the same ingredient as in jerusalem artichokes.

250mgs of Magnesium every night. Works a treat. Could be placebo, but who cares, as long as it sends me off to zzzzzz. Good for other things too.

I've just googled that soda, and it seems to work on reducing anxiety which is an issue for me.

So might give it a try (although I think I eat a healthy diet). I'm just amazed I hadn't heard of it before because I thought I'd tried all the over the counter sleep remedies there are!

Grumpy,

Don't just think about it, take it!

What harm will it do? I found it also helped with perimenopausal palpitations too. But that may not apply to you. And I eat well also. But it's up to you. Best of luck.

Thanks. Am on HRT for the perimenopausal symptoms, but it hasn't sorted the sleeping. Will give it a go.

Grumpy.

It may work for you, it may not, but I sure hope it helps. No harm trying anyway is there?

I hope it does work for you. But who knows. I am not saying it is a miracle cure or anything like that, just that it seems to work for me.

And when I do forget to take it and nod off, but wake at 3 am, when I take it then it works for me. Maybe it is all in my head, but who cares.

GrumpyOldBag · 05/07/2017 21:57

And no hangover in the morning? Can't take normal sleeping tablets at 3 am. Am going to give it a go anyway. Thank you. And as you say, if it's a placebo, who cares.

Grumpy,

Absolutely no effect in the morning. Just a delight in having slept without prescribed stuff, which I have never taken.
