Scoliosis

Hello,

So I have mild scoliosis in my lower back - no treatment other than physio/pain relief when it flares up or when pregnant.

Long story short I have been building up running since January and my lower back/knee is causing me problems again. I have regular massage and she has said to ask for a scan etc at the GP but I'm not sure?!

Is running quite harsh for a dodgy back? I'm gutted it's hurting really and wondered if there was anything else I could do!

Running is fairly bad for your back esp if you have scoliosis. I have had an horrific year with a prolapsed disc and you really want to avoid that. Find a good Pilates class, listen to your body and probably stop running. Sorry

Hi,

I have the same and see a chiropractor once a month as it's about the only thing that keeps me going.

I haven't asked him specifically about running but he said avoid sudden lifts or anything that could jar the back (I used to do body pump) and also avoid breast stroke when swimming. He suggested yoga/Pilates/body balance for strengthening.

Of course you're best to get specialist advice but I'm afraid I was told if something makes the pain worse then stop.

Hope you find out your triggers & the pain eases x

Yes, you should ask for a scan then any physio or other person advising you can see where the problem lies. Pilates and yoga are good suggestions, ideally getting someone who had significant experience in the area and can advise specific exercises and observe that you are doing them correctly. I have a yoga instructor who sees my daughter and it has helped.

I have scoliosis, mid/upper back I think, can't quite remember! I had an operation on it when I was 14 where rods were inserted to keep the curve stable. I am 41 now and run regularly without problems, find it very helpful to avoid stiffness and am in more pain when I don't run as I work at a computer. I would see someone about it, but perhaps technique or over training may be the cause.

I have a slight scoliosis it wasn't discovered till I was in my twenties. I did a lot of running when young and other sport. I made it a lot worse and in my forties ended up using a walking stick a few times. Ended up having physio and seeing a podiatrist which really helped. I have to be really careful though. My joints have worn in a way that causes issues, personally I would avoid running.

Thanks for the replies - I've tried to get a GP apt but it's a 5 week wait Grin to discuss it all and see what she thinks.

In the meantime I think I will YouTube some Pilates exercises and have a break from running - gutted!!
