I'm 40 soon I've had irregular periods but they are now getting ridiculous!

I've had tests I'm ovulating but no period

Scan showed nothing previously doctor won't see me until I've missed them for a while bloody year

I've done so many pregnancy tests all negative last one was Monday this week

Anyone else found anything to help with making period regular.

I'm not stressed or over weight I've started taking multivitamin and still nothing

There is absolutely nothing you can take to make periods come when you want them to, except the Pill which will give you a false cycle.

You could be going into peri menopause. Before age 45 this is called premature or early menopause. Keep a record of your cycles for another 6 months then see your GP. If it is early meno the medical treatment is HRT up to age 50 at least.

PollyPerky · 30/06/2017 09:01

It's unlikely you ARE ovulating if you are not having a period. It's usually the opposite in perimenopause- women have periods but they are anovular- no ovulation.
How do you know you were ovulating?

I don't understand why your GP won't even SEE you till you have missed periods for a year. Surely you can book an appt to discuss anything- you don't have to say in advance what it's for?

Change your GP? Sounds like they are not exactly supportive.

Foreverhopeful22 · 30/06/2017 09:31

I had bloods done that showed hormones for ovulation plus I do weekly opk and have ovulated 3 times in last three months.

Can't change doctors as it's only one in village. It's their policy

OP posts:
PollyPerky · 30/06/2017 10:09

Their 'policy' is they don't see women until they have missed 12 periods?

You need a referral to a gynae if your GP refuses to treat you.

Don't put up with this crap non-treatment. Go back to the drs and insist on being taken seriously.

sadie9 · 30/06/2017 10:13

Are you trying to conceive? It is worrying. I had irregular periods also - anything 26 to 42 days then, like you I'd miss one completely.
What seemed to help get them more regular was going for a walk most days, 30 mins. I say it 'seemed' to help, so may not work for everyone.
Are you seeing egg white mucus at all?

Foreverhopeful22 · 30/06/2017 12:26

Polly - she won't send me to gynaecologist or fertility as the scan and tests showed nothing wrong.

I have complained and asked and there is not much more I can do she point blank will not refer me as everything was normal . Until 12 months of missed then she will do something .

Sadie - yes to th egg white and trying to conceive (I have one 2 year old) and desperate for another)

What tests have been done to date and on what cycle days.

If you are not having periods it is highly likely that you are not ovulating. You may well have been misinformed and OPKs are next to useless in respect of irregular cycles too. These kits measure LH and if the level of LH is higher than normal the kit simply reads that and gives a false result.

I would print out the NICE guidelines re fertility treatment to show them as you are being messed around here. I would also find another GP practice to register at as a matter of course. You should have been referred onto a gynae at a subfertility unit far sooner than now.

Foreverhopeful22 · 30/06/2017 18:56

Attila - I had bloods , swabs and finally scan.

I was on around day 50 plus oh no show.

I was told bloods showed normal hormone levels and showed was ovulating.

This doctors is the only one in my village I wouldn't get into another doctors as they are too booked up

I was told that because I have a child already I would not be seen by a fertility person .

I will go back Monday and request again I get referred to a gynaecologist although I doubt she will

OP posts:
PollyPerky · 30/06/2017 21:38

if she refuses, say you want to go privately for one appt with a gynae for a chat at least then you can go back to the NHS .
You ought not to have to resort to this, but in all honesty, buying good healthcare is just like buying clothes, a holiday, a car- whatever. Help is out there and if it was that important and money was tight I'd forgo clothes, holidays, or whatever and buy medical care.

PollyPerky · 30/06/2017 21:40

You cannot be ovulating normally and having normal cycles if the cycle is not complete and doesn't end in a period. Periods follow ovulation like night follows day.
You can ask for your results under data laws- ask for your FSH, LH and estrogen levels from the tests. Get a copy of those results. Look up the scores and compare with normal fertile scores.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 30/06/2017 22:11

"Attila - I had bloods , swabs and finally scan. I was on around day 50 plus oh no show. I was told bloods showed normal hormone levels and showed was ovulating".

I doubt very much that information you were given was at all correct and you are being fobbed off by a GP who seems not up to speed at all. It is also quite possible to have periods without ovulating and if your cycle is consistently irregular that scenario is likely to be happening.

The only piece of correct info you've been given is the part about the access to fertility treatment under the NHS when you are already a parent. But even then the NHS may see you.

Can you travel outside the village to another GP practice, say in the nearest town?.

Foreverhopeful22 · 01/07/2017 06:38

I will ask for an actual copy of my results. As I think I need to compare.

I also understood by numerous googling the subject that you can ovulate and not have regular periods

I will ask Monday for a copy and let you know what they say

One blood test cannot tell your GP that 'you are ovulating'. An FSH score can be raised which would indicate perimenopause, or post menopause, but a normal score does not mean you are ovulating; it simply means that on the day the blood was taken it wasn't raised.

Likewise you scan cannot show everything to be normal- it really depends on what they looked for in the scan. It could show signs of ovulation - emerging follicles, old follicles - but it doesn't show you are ovulating every month. It depends on what your GP asked the scanner to look for.

A swab is meaningless- this would be done to test for infections, not fertility.

In any case, blood tests are very unreliable. Your GP is fobbing you off.

Do you have the money to see a gynae privately if you continue to get nowhere with your GP?

Foreverhopeful22 · 01/07/2017 07:05

Polly - I don't have the money for private. I wish I did

So what tests should I be asking for .

The scan was to rule out cysts and abnormalities

OP posts:
PollyPerky · 01/07/2017 14:43

I think there are 2 issues going on here.
If you area does not fund you to seek fertility treatment or advice on conception from a gynae, then you're stuck.

At 40, the odds are you are having an early menopause. NICE has said that women under 45 should have blood tests to determine this.
That means testing your FSH and LH hormones between days 2-5 of a cycle. For 2 separate cycles.

This means your GP will have to sort the paperwork so you can get your tests done on those days, when your next 2 periods come.

It's not impossible you will conceive if you are approaching menopause early, but it may be harder.

If your GP is willing to treat you as necessary with drugs to help ovulation, that's about the best you can hope for I assume if your area doesn't fund treatment or tests for women who already have a child.

You can find more info about early meno from the Daisy Network charity. They have a drop-down menu showing signs, tests and treatment, on their website.

But I think if you are TTC you need to make this very clear to your GP and insist on some simple blood tests as a minimum. Waiting a year with no periods is mad because by then it will be too late anyway.

Foreverhopeful22 · 03/07/2017 09:16

Phoned doctors got appointment on 24th feels like another lifetime away!

I will ask for a copy of my results and to be referred to a gynaecologist

Pandamanda3 · 03/07/2017 09:35

Oh op you too!!!
My gp gave me exactly the same speach, im not trying to conceive however iv not had a period for just coming up to my 12 months now and I can't wait to find out exactly why that is. To make matters worse iv actually been really unwell for a long time with anaemia and absorption issues but she wasn't in the slightest bit concerned by my lack of cycle Confused
She said "they won't do anything or say your hitting menopause till 12 months?
I just want to know actually what the bloody hell is going on which I don't think Id much to ask.
So I really do sympathise with you, iv had history of nasty spells of endometriosis too and she said it's probably just that back Shock
Bloody crazy attitude to have I tried & tried to argue it but nop got sent home with a don't call me till 12 months attitude.
Good luck I hope you get it sorted I really do.

Foreverhopeful22 · 03/07/2017 10:34

Pandam - sorry to hear your struggling.

It's so frustrating my concern is if something is wrong or going wrong waiting 12 months could make things worse

I'm going back and really insisting I get a referral
