There, I said it.

I get bouts of mild constipation/mild IBS and have done since DS2(11) was born - no big deal.

But I go through periods where the anus itches and feels stung and hurts at night.

Last night I had a pre-bed bubble-bath as advised on the NHS site for "itchy bottom" applied anusol and hoped the itch would fade. It didn't. paracetamol didn't touch it (I suppose that isn't really for itch-type discomfort anyway). At 1.30 I put a bag of frozen peas in my pyjamas which helped a bit. It didn't really get better till about 6am at which point the alarm went off.

I suppose the slightly messed up bowel habits that come with constipation don't help.

Do I need sudocream or a doctor? any advice?

Oh poor you. How did you determine that it was threadworm?

Embarrassingquestion1 · 30/06/2017 13:15

It's too awful to tell you.

In other news: DH has it too. (I am kind of hoping that I caught it from him not vice versa).

Have told him he needs to buy tight pants for nighttime. I guess thermals would work.

Grim stuff

It is very contagious. Hence why everyone in the household needs treating at once.

Probably caught from shared towels.

Trim nails too. Make sure good toilet hygiene is adhered to. Hand washing with hot water and soap. Not just a quick rinse. Otherwise you will just keep reinfecting.

NomDePlumeReloaded · 30/06/2017 13:56

Don't be embarrassed. It is hugely common. Most households with small children have had a worm infestation at some point.

our youngest is 11!
(I do have a role in a primary school though....)

thanks NomdePlume,

Have dug out DH's skiing thermals..... and mine.

Last night was less painful than the night before. I put on a layer of Sudocrem in the hope of stopping the little bastards from dessicating/getting back in. A sort of flytrap.

You know how you deworm and deflea dogs because it comes with the pleasures of being a dog owner? Same with kids. Nits and worms; comes with the territory. Grim, but don't feel bad about it. It's probably as easy to catch threadworms in a school as it is D&V.

Embarrassingquestion1 · 30/06/2017 15:16

i might feel a bit better if the kids have it too.... I think I'm feeling guilty about having brought it into the house.

Might be torch patrol tonight.

marital intimacy is somewhat less appealing....

Ds1 says he hasn't got it. Presumably we have to be super careful not to infect him though?

Oh poor you. As long as you all take the meds (even if he's sure he's fine) and do some tedious hygiene stuff, he should be OK. Kind of doesn't matter if he has them or not - just assume you all do. Definitely remember to give the whole family a second dose in a couple of weeks as well.

I panicked myself when dd had worms by reading threads online by people who claimed not to have been able to get rid of them for years, etc. That is NOT the norm and we found they were easily vanquished, as most MNers seem to. So my best advice is to trust the meds and common sense and soon all will be well.

HeyRoly · 30/06/2017 23:35

It's important that you treat everyone in the family even if they don't think they're infected. Purely because they might be unknowingly, and then it'll keep going around the household.

Embarrassingquestion1 · 01/07/2017 20:10

Thanks.

I was in quite a lot of discomfort last night though everyone else is symptom-free. I got up and watched tv for an hour whilst the parasites did their worst.

DH, ds2 (11) and I still have unmistakeable symptoms 32 hours post-treatment. DS1 still thinks he is clear.

We all wore longjohns to bed and I forced everyone to wash themselves off in the shower as soon as they woke up so that I wouldn't have to change the bedlinen again.

Our old Dyson's suction is a bit weak and I dread the washing machine breaking.

sorry I mean that everyone else is pain-itch free. They wouldn't know they had it if they hadn't done a check....

The boys have a question: when you fart, do worms/eggs come out?

OP posts:
PollyPerky · 01/07/2017 21:30

hee hee! no I don't think so. They come out when they want to lay eggs- when it's warm and dark.

A pharmacist I know told me a good trick Hmm - to test if they are still there, put a piece of sellotape on your bum (anus) and they will stick to it. Look in the morning.

I have never gone to bed with sellotape across my anus but there you go...

Embarrassingquestion1 · 01/07/2017 22:06

Oh god.......

Update, we took the tablet on Thursday evening.

I am still wormy :(
DH is no longer wormy :)
DS1 is still not wormy :(
DS2 is still very wormy.....

I think borrowing a recorder at school was probably a bad idea.......

OP posts:
tobee · 02/07/2017 11:58

Don't panic! Stupid worms take a few days to die and can still be visibly alive even now. I strongly suggest everyone takes the pills again at the same time 14 days after first dose. (And if you like 14 days after that.) to clear up any hatchlings. (Sad). I hope you've told the school(s) because they need to do a deep clean iirr otherwise people will be constantly re infecting. We found (after a few times catching them) that home hygiene measure didn't make much difference because it's almost impossible to be entirely thorough. The pills will do the job.

WicksEnd · 02/07/2017 12:44

Erm where did you put that recorder exactly? Grin

I think this may be where you're going wrong 😂

FinnegansCake · 02/07/2017 15:07
