I have to wash the sheets and hoover thoroughly in the bedrooms, yes? Do I do this before we take the stuff or afterwards? Or TWICE???

Do we have to tell nursery (probably got them from there IMO). If we do will they let dc attend today?

Will it be painful, when we have taken the treatment? Will we be able to carry on as normal? What should we tell dc about taking the treatment (don't want it broadcast around universe as it will be unless we lie). Have looked up the two treatments on line and we think we'll get the one dose one as it sounds more effective, is that right?

Anything else we should know / do?

Washing hands regularly, washing bottoms in the morning, is that right? What do you do, wash with a flannel and then hot wash the flannel?

Sorry for being rather dim but I want to get this right first time if possible

Are you going to order the stuff online?

namechangingcoward · 22/03/2007 08:55

Nope, chemist. Has anyone got any answers?

It's no bother, honest - we've been through this within the last 10 days.

See what the chemist has in stock and you all take it. Clean/hoover, and those affected can wear pants under their pyjamas to stop night-time scratching - or if dc are at nursery they might still be in nappies anyway?

Take care with hand washing and separate towels. You should tell nursery and there is no reason for anyone to be off nursery because of it - good hygiene measures stop it spreading. I read something that suggested that it would be a good idea for them to perhaps empty their sandbox as the eggs can hang around in there, and telling them gives them a chance to up the hand washing etc to stop it spreading further.

It's not nice telling them - I saw DD's teacher wince when I told her, she just couldn't help it!

hello my dd got this for the first time last sept ,stripped all beds ,boil washed everything ,damp dusted everywhere i could think of paid close attention to door handles and loo handle with anti bac spray. We all took the meds pripsen i think it was called not v.pleasant but effective just like having a dose of the runs not sore! clean jammies every night worn with pants underneath, wiped bots first thing in the morning and made sure nail brushes used ,hoovered everyday and have to admit bought disposable gloves to check later poos took follow up meds i think after a fortnight so far so good they say 4 out of 10 kids will have suffered from this by the time they are 10 years old .Lastly i informed the school discreetly and they were great although they said no one else had reported it before [to embarresed i suppose] but im sure this is where dd got it hope this helps and feel free to ask anything good luck [you will end up knackered but will hope you get on top of the wrigglers]

3littlefrogs · 22/03/2007 09:51

They can chuck out the old playdough too!!

namechangingcoward · 22/03/2007 09:56

So does the medicine give you the runs, or does it depend which type you take? Should I expect us all to be ill after we take it? Is there a certain time of day to take the meds?

OP posts:
3littlefrogs · 22/03/2007 09:59

We have never had any noticeable side effects from the meds. and we have had our fair share of threadworms over the years - it is a normal part of family life!!!!

auntyspan · 22/03/2007 10:08

Hi all - this is great as I was going to post the very same thing. Prispen - can you get this over the counter or is it on prescription only? We've tried 3 doses of Ovex and it's not helped.
Will do all the damp dusting etc - as far as the bed changes are concerned, how often do you have to do that?

NotanOtter · 22/03/2007 10:14

tablets fine - mine ask for another!

I wash and vac everything (HOT HOT HOT) and clean like a mad thing

You nedd to vac all carpets and stuff as like the tablet brochure says the eggs are vile

i go ental spraying all door handles /drawer handles loo handles with germ killing sprays ( spray is quick!)

afterwards make sure there is a nail brush in the house and warn any thum/finger suckers that they probably brought them into the house

can you tell we had them recently!!!

Your house will be soo clean!

we use boots own family packs and they have always gone after one dose...always...you have to be quite vigilant for a few days with hygeine

also bed clothes and knickers in bed and washed every night for a week or so

namechangingcoward · 22/03/2007 10:30

Ok, there is no way on god's earth that we can wash everybody's bedding and towels daily and hoover and clean the whole house daily.

This is just not going to happen. Are we going to have worms for the rest of our days?

OP posts:
auntyspan · 22/03/2007 10:31

man - my electricity bill is going to be huge!!!

One last thing - DD is only 13 months and therefore can't have the pills. She actually hasn't shown any symptoms but she probably needs treatment - do I need to go to the docs?

namechangingcoward · 22/03/2007 10:33

There is a treatment she can have, auntyspan - I think it's the Ovex one (ask your chemist).

Apparently Irish worm tablets are stonger than British! (Yes we have crossed international boundaries with ours!)

namechangingcoward · 22/03/2007 10:44

No drier here, I am planning to change the sheets and all bedding, towels, etc today after we have taken the med, and I guess again at the weekend?

I am not sure why you would need to change sheets every day if the med kills them all? I can see you need to get rid of all the eggs etc, but if they are dead, there won't be any new eggs on the sheets tomorrow, will there? Am I missing something?

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 22/03/2007 10:49

you don't have to wash all the bedding daily

wash it now before you give them the medicine (on a hot wash) - give them the medicine later. Today, hoover and wipe clean all the door handles/taps wherever their hands are most likely to linger.

when you put them to bed tonight, put them in underpants/knickers plus pyjama trousers/shorts.

FIRST thing in the morning, as soon as they have got up, wash bums and hands (and obviously, underpants/knickers in wash).

carry on with underpants/knickers at night for a bit

repeat dose 2 weeks later to catch any reinfection

theoretically, if no-one scratches their bum, the worms will stop because that is how you reinfect yourself - without reinfecting yourself, there'd be no more worms iyswim

We have had worms several times (grrrr).

foxinsocks · 22/03/2007 10:52

oh and I find the medicine gives us all mild tummy cramps for a bit and TMI, copious loo visits (getting it all out so to speak). Also, it seems to work over a day or so rather than immediately.

And, (really TMI), when we were really infested (and this only happened once - now I know what to look for!), after taking the medicine, the kids became super itchy as if the worms were all trying to crawl their way out to freedom

DS just woke up crying from the discomfort of an itchy bottom

We all took the tablets after lunch - how long before they start working?
