What happens after a gp makes a referral? (Neurology)

My gp referred me, I can see on my records he sent an email on 8th June to the consultant saying ' thank you for discussing this patient with me and arranging to see her. Please find attached her medical records'.'

Will I get a phone call/ letter usually? Is there a time period in which to chase in case it's been mislaid/ a letter went astray? Asking partly as Royal Mail often seem to hate my address and lose my post!

Thanks!

Hi, I've been referred for different things a few times I've usually been told it'll take about eight weeks. I'd imagine it depends on the wait in your area though but you can call your doctors surgery to ask them if you're worried. Hope alls okay op try not to worry in the mean time.
Just thinking actually, when they were really worried about my heart the letters came through very quick (about a week) so it might be worth checking with your GP, they're not very forgiving if you miss these appointments 😬

You can follow it up any time. Just phone your GP and ask the receiptionist where you have been referred to and give them a phone call. They can tell you when to expect your appointment letter, etc.

Neurology due to its wide scope tends to take a while to hear back from. I think I waited 2 months for an appointment and 4/5 months to see my neuro the last time I was referred. My local hospital often does phone calls to offer dates then follows up with a letter.

my DP was referred to neurology last year and got a letter with an appointment. he waited more than 6 months though. Depending on the issue you may not hear/and will be seen fir a while. He is under a few other hospital consultants but neurology has by far the longest wait round.

Lengthy wait for Neurology appts in my health authority, if it is something urgent, if a private appt is an option for you, do you have a health plan? it usually costs £250 (first appt including examination follow ups £220, however MRI if required are expensive £850 for mine (head, cervical spine and whole spine), but from seeing the Neurologist to getting my diagnosis was under 3 weeks, I now see the same consultant on his NHS list. First, perhaps ring and check that the hospital has the referral and ask how long you will wait for an appt, and make your decision from there, depending of the urgency of your symptoms, in my case it was very urgent, luckily, I did have health insurance in place and could claim back my fees. I hope you are feeling much better soon OP, I know how you can feel in limbo waiting for appts to come through not to mention the worry it must be causing you and your friends and family.

I'm not hugely worried, I think GP is being cautious. I just don't want the annoyance of missing it.

My only experience before has been choose and book and I'd presumed all use it now

Thanks for answering

Good luck OP, I am sure you will get an appt letter through the post in the coming weeks, pleased to hear its precautionary. All the best.
