checking YOURSELF for HEADLICE tips needed...

SMSis30today · 21/03/2007 13:34

DTD2 has headlice (or should I say head louse + eggs). I am itchy too at first I thought it was phsycological when I combed thru and didn't find anyting. But it doesn't feel physcological. I have long hair and don't think combing myself is very efficient or thorough and may have missed some.

Any tips would be appreciated...

oh it's a nightmare - have you got a nitty gritty comb? I did myself with that and pulled out a few however, I noticed that comb doesn't work that well on fine hair so unless your hair is thick, you may have to co-opt another adult to do it for you!

I also slapped a load of Hedrin on my head to kill off any of the ones I'd missed with the comb.

Yep. I am using a bug buster comb as my primary detection (as I can never see the blighters on the nitty gritty properly), and then going round with a nitty gritty to catch any I may have missed + eggs whcih I dispense into a pint of water so I can check at the end.

And I have think hair so that won't be an issue either...

the Hedrin was quite good (but I had to really plaster it on and it took several washes to get it out) - you just have to repeat it 7 days later to make sure it's effective.

You could try massaging olive oil and tea tree oil into your scalp, leaving overnight then combing - worked for me when I got nits from my DN . Seemed to work better than the over-the-counter stuff.

Myself and my 2 dds have very long thick hair. You couldn't get a nitty gritty comb through it. Just using the ordinary plastic ones takes about one and half hours a head! If you've got long hair, you must go for the strongest chemicals you can find! Unfortunately the nits become resistant to various ones, so you have to keep trying new ones. Hedrin is seen to be quite good at the moment.

I agree q7 - I had a terrible time with dd because her hair is so thick.

foxinsocks · 21/03/2007 14:38

but I didn't do the chemicals (not sure they work anymore) - the Hedrin works by suffocating the nits - you just have to make sure you get enough on (and obviously, if other children still have them at school, you're likely to get them back again!)

would recommend tying the hair up too (for school)

Well just checked myself again (front to back over a sink this time) - and still can't find anything. No lice, no eggs....maybe it is physcological after all...will see how it goes. Don't really want to be using insecticides unless I confirm I have them.

oh god i'm itching just reading this post lol.i caught from child i look after and
we used the nitty gritty comb and it really was good even tho i have long thick hair and so does child..rinsing in water after every comb in glass jug and wiping on kitchen roll to be extra sure showed up the little blighters aswell.we never used chemicals just lots of conditioner and i did her hair and mine and her parents every night and they were gone within the first week and then just did every 2 days for the following week to make extra sure.it's horribly time consuming and we did look like a group of monkeys crooming each other(quite funny when i think about it now) but def worth the time and effort.
i now put leave in conditioner(dove spray is fab)on her hair every day before plaiting for school apparently makes it hard for them to hold on and so far 18mths later we haven't had them again. good luck hope you get rid of them soon.

{weezy goes to find comb scratching head}
