dd2 had a urine test done approx.12 days ago.when i rang for results next week, receptionist seemed pretty sure that the test looked normal. however,i've had a letter this morning asking for a repeat test.when i spoke to receptionist (doctor not there),she said that it appeared that no bacteria had grown but that there "could be a potential" there and that she had these "high pess...puss? cells" and described it like a "scar that's gone a bit yucky but you can't see it in urine". does anyone know if i should be worrying about this?

it just like a bacteria. It can indicate a urine infection but usually, ime, it indicates that the sample wasnt as sterile as it should have been iykwim

'Pus cells' are white blood cells. Their job is to mop up germs.
Seeing these cells in urine can mean that there are now, or have been recently, germs in the urine, even though they couldn't see any germs on the test this time.
Hence the doctor asking for a repeat test to see if they can track down the germs and see if it is an infection that'll need antibiotics.

can it be serious?
she had nitrite in her original sample.

depends how you mean 'serious' - worst case I can think of is a couple of weeks of antibiotics.

Why did she have the test in the first place?

she had cystitis symptoms and we had to take her to the emergency doctor on the saturday morning.her wee was orangey brown and very "hot". doctor said there was no blood in the urine but high in nitrite. he prescribed an antibiotic and she seemed better almost straight away. even her wee changed back to clear. anyway, she finished her course of antibiotics and i presumed everything was ok as "no bacterial growth" showed up in her results. was surprised to find this letter and rang up to see what it was about. as i said, receptionist told me that the results looked normal but perhaps a little high in "pus cells". feeling a bit nervous now.

I wouldn't worry - if the second sample was taken after she'd had the antibiotics I reckon they'd worked so well they had killed all the germs and just left a few white blood cells floating around.

The followup sample will check that everything really has cleared up.
