Very Painful Fibroids

Melody01 · 18/06/2017 19:40

I would be very grateful for any experience and views please. I am 50 years old and have multiple fibroids (small) causing heavy bleeding and pain, pain, pain every month. The doctor I saw pushed hard for me to have a coil (which I have never had before). She said go away and think about it. I am not keen as hormones always affect me (severe focal migraines) and feeling yuk. I would like to consider endometrial ablation as I am older and have heard good things about it. Any experience anyone or ideas? Many thanks

Hi Melody sorry you're going through this, I suffered with fibroids for many years feel your pain.
I wasn't able to have a coil fitted because I had a large fibroid next to my cervix which was twisting it all out of shape (pleasant Sad) and due to the amount of fibroids ablation was not recommended. I ended up having a hysterectomy, it was a huge decision which took a lot of thought. I've just started going through menopause which brings it's own set of issues but I still feel much better and I wish I'd done it sooner

I would look into seeing a gynaecologist to be further evaluated re the fibroids, GP should refer you onto such a person. A Mirena is not going to address the problematic fibroids that are already there, think they would have to be surgically removed.

MrsDoleysteabags - Sorry to hear about your troubles. Good luck with the menopause. Glad to hear you are feeling generally better though.

AttilaTheMeerkat I think you are right about seeing a Gynaecologist. The Dr said they would not want to remove fibroids because of my age and being close to menopause age (when they should shrink). I don't know when that will be however and they are very painful.

"The Dr said they would not want to remove fibroids because of my age"

If your GP was the Dr in question that also makes me think you ought to see a gynaecologist.

Hi, I'm a long time lurker, but felt the need to chip in on this post. I have multiple large and very very painful fibroids, so can completely sympathise. It would be worth you asking about Zoladex injections. I've been on them for 12 months now, and am not exaggerating when I say they have transformed my life. The fibroids have shrunk massively (I used to be able to feel them in my tummy) and the pain & bleeding has stopped completely. I was initially only supposed to be on them temporarily, but my gynae has agreed I can stay on them longer as I'm close to menopause age (47), and have a higher than ideal BMI, so a hysterectomy is a bigger risk. I can't tell you how amazing it feels to be pain free, and no longer anaemic, for the first time in 20 years!

Good luck OP, I've got every sympathy x

I'm waiting for a myomectomy (fibroid removal). I had to push for it over a mirena.

I saw a GP with Special Interest in Gynae at a Health Centre. She said that a coil and the Progesterone in it could improve pain of fibroids and amount of bleed. At 50 I have had enough of these heavy bleeds and just want a definitive answer. I have friends who have had ablations with good effect. I don't want hormones of any type.

I had fibroids and an enlarged uterus. I had an ablation last September which didn't work, a gynaecologist told me that they rarely do with fibroids.

I had a hysterectomy 2 weeks ago (retained ovaries) I'm 48! It was a big decision to make but my surgery went well and I'm recovering well.

Hi op I have five small fibroids which together with peri meno I was having horrendous heavy periods and pain leaving me severely anemic. After putting up with it for years I got a Mirena on the advice of my gyne, I wasn't at all keen but was desperate so gave it a go, it took 6 months to settle down but from the get go my periods and pain have lessened every month, now 9 months in and my periods are almost non exsistant and for the first time in years I feel quite well.
