I think ds has conjunctivitis - one eye is all bloodshot, he has this horrible white slimy stuff coming out of it, and he says his eye hurts!! The thing is, what should I do about school tomorrow, I know it is contagious - should I take him to the docs and keep him off till it clears up, or is that a bit extreme?! I don't like keeping him off, as he is at an important time in his school life iykwim!!

you can get drops from the chemist without prescription...Optrex infected eye drops...about at fiver , i think

My dd has it atm it's very contagious so she's off pre school which is highly annoying as she's not ill as such and has been bouncing around all day. The gp will give him antibiotic eye drops.

What do you think re: school, should I keep him off or send him in?

Clean the eyes regularly with cooled boiled water with seperate pieces of cotton... Depending on how sticky his eyes are yes I'd think about keeping him off for the day.

Think you'll have to keep him off i'm afraid annoying I know!

Just get to the GPs as soon as you can tomorrow -they will prescribe drops/ointment and then it depends on what the GP says or what the school policy is regards to going back eg. some might say its OK to go back as soon as treatments started or after 24hrs of drops etc

Thanks - I will see what kind of state he is in in the morning!!

Also dd's started in one eye now it's in both and the drops seem to make it worse before it gets betetr.

We took ds to the gp this morning with conjunctivitis - his eyes were glued shut when he woke up . My GP said that the latest guidelines are to not treat it as it makes no difference just keep them clean, he did say that if the eyes became red and swollen around the outside then they will prescribe antibiotic medicine.

Thanks for the advice. Seems to be a lot of it around at the moment!!

Tea (no milk!!) works wonders. When dd gets it I make a mug of tea in the morning then dip into it (when it cools!) throughout the day with cotton wool. Just be careful where it drips though, obviously.

If you go to your Gp's, ask for some saline solution. The nurse there might give you some.

Also a weak solution of johnsons baby shampoom works wonders. My mum says they use this in the hospital she works in for their patients.

It could also be a sty. They are painful and hurt when you blink. But conjunctivitus is very contagious so make sure theres no rubbing of eye as it will pass on to the other!
