Chicken pox for a third time!

ThanksForAllTheFish · 17/06/2017 13:46

Would you be concerned? Would it warrant a trip to the Dr for you?

DD (7) has had chicken pox twice before (both times confirmed by DR). Last time was just under a year ago.

Third round started yesterday evening - 20 or so spots some liquid filled- others still just red. One under armpit, one behind ear, two in hairline, one possibly two on her tongue (right at the back). She also has a patch on the outside her neck that looks like a bruise but is raised and rough feeing and looks like it has a small spot in the centre.

I can cope with treating her at home so don't want to go to the dr if it's not really nessecary. But seriously chicken pox three times?

She also had scarlet fever a year or so ago that came back a few days after a ten day course of antibiotics. She needs another 10 day round to clear it up. I wonder if she's just one if these children that will just recatch everything that most people only get once. Sigh.

Included a photo of one of the spots for your viewing pleasure - also if it looks or sounds like something else I would appreciate the heads up.

In all honesty that doesn't look like pox to me. It doesn't look inflamed or irritated like a proper blister if you get my meaning. I'm not sure what it could be but it doesn't look like the pox. Helpful I know Wink

Ridingthegravytrain · 17/06/2017 14:18

That looks more like molloscum contagiosum to me

ThanksForAllTheFish · 17/06/2017 14:25

Yes I see what you are saying. That photo was taken last night (before I slathered on the camomile lotion). It now looks like this. But it's hard to see it properly because of the camomile. The first photo is of a spot that has developed into a yellow blister overnight. The second one is the one under the armpit.

Just looking up molloscum contagiosum and it does look similar to that. Would it cause fever though? I can't find any info?

She's been sitting around 38.7. - 38.9 unless given. Calpol brings it down to around 36.9- 37.2 but it goes back up when the calpol wears off.

It can happen. I've had it 5 times, I do have an autoimmune disease though but then I know others that have had chicken pox several times.

GPs will not be surprised by you being infected many times.

PigletJohn · 17/06/2017 15:51

I would certainly see the doc. I had it a couple of weeks ago (the receptionist discouraged me) and was given antivirals, after which the later spots were smaller and less painful. Many of them healed away without forming blisters or scabs, though the first ones did.

Maybe this is just normal, I don't know.

dementedpixie · 17/06/2017 15:56

It's not molluscum as that's a skin virus that lasts for months if not years.

flumpybear · 17/06/2017 16:29

I concur that doesn't look like MC my DD had it abo t 2 years - awful

I'd get it checked out to be honest - it doesn't really look like CP either to me but if it is then she's had it twice at least when she's been older (if you get it as a baby you can get it again) it may need a bit of investigation but worth asking for professional help

ThanksForAllTheFish · 17/06/2017 16:48

Yes I don't think it's MC. The info on that says it takes about 20 days for the spots to develop and these have came out in a matter of hours.

I will get her checked out. It's definitely something (if not chicken pox) so I we will be off to see the Dr on Monday. Obviously I will keep an eye on it and use an OOH service if really needed.

I am a little concerned at the 'bruising' on throat area and keeping an eye on her mouth to make sure the spots don't appear to be coming out inside her throat or near her tonsils. I know such things can make breathing difficult and would need to be treated. Her toungue is also looking a little furry with a whiteish coating.

It's hard to capture the 'bruising' with a photo as it looks darker and more noticeable in real life, but I've added a couple of pics anyway. One with and one without the flash. The area feels rough and scaly - like eczema but she doesn't have eczema and it's more brown / green looking than red.

Does look bruised - odd place?! Try non emergency for advice - did she bruise herself there?!

ThanksForAllTheFish · 17/06/2017 17:17

I asked yesterday if she had bumped it or hurt herself and she said no. Yesterday was sports day at school so I thought maybe she bumped it or was hit by a ball. DH was at sports day and said nothing happened but she was complaining to him of feeling cold and tired. He thought it was just because they were outside, hanging around between races etc.

When I picked her up she was looking a bit under the weather and said she was feeling dizzy. She came home and fell asleep on the couch for an hour or so and when she woke up I checked her temp and looked for rashes - that's when I noticed the bruise, spots starting and the fever.

She was fine in the morning when she left for school.

Loads more spots out overnight. It's looking more and more like chicken pox as time goes on. She got them all over her face now as well. At least what ever it is should be gone by the time we are due to go on holiday in 3 weeks (we had to miss last years trip due to chicken pox).

Yes those ones are defo the pox! Evil little bastards they are. X

ThanksForAllTheFish · 19/06/2017 23:13

Well they have really come out in force now. They are everywhere: arms, legs, back, face, on the soles of her feet, and the plans of her hands, inside her ears, on her scalp, in her mouth, on her tongue, on her vulva (some even inside Sad ). Keeping my fingers crossed she doesn't get any inside her eyelids. She has a few near her eyes and on her eyebrows.

I've noticed a big white lump on one of her tonsils tonight so wondering if she's developed one there or it's tonsillitis along side the chicken pox.

Not sure if I should be taking her to the Dr at this stage or not?

I know they can do anything for the actual spots but I'm concerned she has tonsillitis or may be developing spots in her throats which I know may require antibiotics.

HeyRoly · 19/06/2017 23:17

I don't think there's any point taking her to the GP. It's not unheard of to get chicken pox multiple times (I know twins who've had it four times... EACH Shock) especially if the first dose was mild/before the age of one.

Here's hoping that since this dose seems pretty bad it'll be the last time.

I've just endured chicken pox with my two children and it's bloody miserable Flowers

ThanksForAllTheFish · 20/06/2017 00:48

I'm keeping a close eye on her and her breathing tonight. I'm just concerned that the spots on her tonsils may cause issues. She's been unable to eat today but has been taking fluids (with a bit of persuasion). She's currently whimpering in her sleep, making the odd high pitched noise.

I'm just concerned about any complications arising from the ones in her mouth to be honest - also bacterial tonsillitis as she prone to that when already ill.

Her first dose of pox she was nearly 4 and was very mild, about 10 spots on her back . The second dose was this time last year when she was 6 and was around mild to average I would say (100 or so spread across her back, face, chest mainly with half a dozen behind each ear).
This dose is really bad, I would say there's 10x more on her back since that last photo I've posted - I've seen a few kids with pox but never like this (although I know it happens) so here's hoping this will be the last.

am a bit disappointed that by not going to the doc you have missed out on the antivirals.

I think they helped.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 20/06/2017 12:01

PigletJohn I really don't think my Dr would have given her antivirals anyway. We went to the Dr the previous two times she had them (right at the start so within the timeframe for antivirals to work) and just advised camomile lotion for the itching and calpol for the fever. I think some areas are better at giving out this sort of treatment than others.

If any of the spots become really red and the redness is spreading take to to the doctors please. My baby had a strep and staph infection in the chickenpox wounds and ended up on drips for a week. Chickenpox is vile - your poor child to have it 3 times.

flumpybear · 21/06/2017 07:08

She should get antibiotics if she's got bacterial tonsillitis - you should get her checked out today
