Taking care of your hands

Help - my hands are turning into my mother's: with wrinkly, dry skin and dreadful nails. What can I do for a drastic hand rescue routine? (Currently just slap on handcream ocassionally). (Haven't started to consider feet.) Who has great hands out there, and what do you do?

Also have terrible hands (too much bottle washing etc and rushing around after two young children!). Have started to put Shea Butter on my hands at night and on occasion also manage to put cotton gloves over the top to help the process. Also, now trying to put on a little cream (anything really) whenever I can. Trying to remember to always put rubber gloves on too to help. My hands look a mess and my 4 year old daughter says they are 'too rough'! Any tips also gratefully received!

I'd love to know the secret of great looking hands too - I use cream (nutrogena - good but they are still dry sore) and rubber gloves but have the hands of a 90 year old. Anyone got the secret of hands that arn't rough as sandpaper

viticella · 20/03/2007 14:42

Add me to that - my hands have been really dry to the point of cracking/bleeding knuckles, due to simply being in and out of water all day, every day. Also recommend rubber gloves, and don't touch cleaning products like Flash at all as it flares up into awful eczema. Do all mums get this and how do you survive?

mckenzie · 20/03/2007 14:45

Clarins hand and nail treatment cream. Be generous with it. And always were rubber gloves when washing up/cleaning etc.

mckenzie · 20/03/2007 14:46

sorry, that should of course have been 'wear rubber gloves'

Heartmum2Jamie · 20/03/2007 14:46

Count me in too! I currently have skin on my hands that is rough and paper thin and looks like it will split open at any second

nickytwotimes · 20/03/2007 14:52

i put vaseline on them at bed time. yes, i know, it sounds dirty.... but it works

BarefootDancer · 20/03/2007 14:53

Crikes, what a mess - I hope someone comes along with good hands and much-needed advice!

ooohh there are a few threads about this and The Body Shop's Hemp Hand Protector was highly recommended. I have been using it for a few months now and it really is amazing. Even applying it just once a day makes a huge difference.

LittleHarrysMum · 20/03/2007 15:00

My hairdresser smothers her hands in Vaseline and then puts on those plastic gloves (the one's they wear when colouring hair) and she said this works fantastically. Have yet to try it but need to soon, I am also in the club of dry, horrible hands due to too much bottle washing

expatinscotland · 20/03/2007 15:01

I am eternally grateful to marthamoo for recommending the Body Shop Hemp Salve for hands.

It really is the biz.

hennipenni · 20/03/2007 15:12

Another recomendation for Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector, have used it for about 6 yrs and have never found anything to beat it.

olivo · 20/03/2007 16:58

i got a lovely hand protector set for christmas from crabtree and evelyn - it has one tube that is like a scrub then another which is cream. its fantastic and gives fab results!

BarefootDancer · 20/03/2007 19:02

OK hemp hand cream it is. And what do I do with my nails (short, split, mis-shapen, with bits coming off the side )...........nice!

That's why I use the Clarins one Barefootdancer as it is really good for your nails too.

wurlywurly · 20/03/2007 19:18

try using aqueauos(sp?) cream rather then soap , i find soap very drying.

BarefootDancer · 20/03/2007 19:18

Thanks, I will try that. Is it expensive?

OP posts:
wurlywurly · 20/03/2007 19:19

about £2.50 for a HUGE tub

mckenzie · 20/03/2007 20:07

if you meant the Clarins one I think it's about £12/14 but that is quite a large tube. If you are going to get it make sure you get the Hand and Nail Treatment cream, not just the Hand cream.
