Tooth extraction - 6 yr old?

I recently took my 6 yr old ds for a dental check up. Our new (Polish) dentist suggested he'd like to extract one of his perfectly healthy lower milk teeth, to make room for the new one that is beginning to appear. He says it will prevent the need for braces later on but I am slightly alarmed! My dd had exactly the same problem and we just let nature take it's course and her teeth are lovely and straight. Ds isn't bothered but I don't want him to have a bad experience at this early age. What do you think?

God no! they're only milk teeth!

Leave it to nature!
I had teeth taken out as a young child - in order to make room for my new ones - , then needed a brace to close the gaps left by taking the teeth out!
Not sure why the nationality of the dentist is relevant though.

Yes, I just thought that maybe as he's Polish he has a different approch/training. No fear, we're half Turkish in this household , so no offence intended!

No, I didn't mean that - I just assumed he'd trained in England.

supersox · 20/03/2007 13:56

Anyway, I think I am definitely going to leave it to nature!

I would leave it too, the adult teeth will push the baby teeth out as they come through. Alos her mouth will grow & that will help with space.

Removing it now could cause more problems & ime, is more liekly to lead to needing a brace than letting nature take it's course.
