Lump in breast

Jupitertomars · 14/06/2017 21:15

Ive found a painless lump in my right boob a couple of cm from my nipple. Ive just finished breastfeeding my 9 month old daughter. Last feed was a week ago but I reduced the feeds very gradually.

Is it most likely related to that or could it be something more sinister.

Im 26.

With any breast lump it's better safe than sorry. In all likelihood it's related to breastfeeding and nothing to worry about but please do go and get it seen by your GP just in case.

I went to my gp today and seen the male doctor. I didnt think at the time of booking that I should have asked for a female. Anyway he couldn't have a look as there wasn't a chaperone available so ive to go back tomorrow.
Thing is the lump started to feel a bit tender. I assumed it was due to me poking around with it but I started to massage it, the way I did previously to unblock a blocked duct and a huge gush of clear fluid emerged. The lump went down and the tenderness disappeared.

Im now thinking it was due to stopping breastfeeding. The lump is barely visable now and feels a lot softer to touch although I would.still say there was a lump there.

So im in two minds whether to go back tomorrow. Its pretty embarrassing and I feel uncomfortable getting my boob out to the doctor and a chaperone when its probably nothing.

Or dont know if I should ask to switch to a female doctor.

Or just suck it up and get it checked.

The thing thats making me uncomfortable is the doctor seemed uncomfortable. Like he couldn't look at me whilst discussing my breast.

He's a doctor. I doubt he would feel uncomfortable examining a breast. Go back and get it checked, for peace of mind.

Thanks. I will do. Im probably over thinking it.

Hes referred me to a breast clinic for a scan. Feeling positive its related to.breastfeeding but the fact hes referred me makes me nervous although I'm glad he has as I'd like to know for certain its nothing.

I went to have my breasts checked last week too, lying down I noticed what looked like a slight dent booked an appointment the same day, Doc said because I breastfed it is less likely to be something sinister and that it could be duct estasia I think it's called?

I've also been referred to breast clinic, dent has gone but I'm really paranoid about breast cancer (hate checking myself in fear of finding something) so at least if I do get checked it will put my mind at rest. I'm 22 btw.

Hopefully it'll put your mind at ease.

Do you know how long your likely to wait for an apt?

I asked the doctor but all he said is that because its a hard lump he will ask for an urgent appointment. So unsure what that means with the nhs.

I waited 12 weeks for a referral to another clinic, hoping I dont need to wait that long. My dad is with BUPA and when he had a lump he was scanned the very next day and had results within a week of first going to.doctor.

Wish I could do that!

2 weeks I was told, appt is next week. I'm sure she said it's never longer than 2 weeks so you should get a letter through soon I should think.

Jupitertomars · 16/06/2017 20:53

Oh really thats great. I wonder if its the same in scotland. Just strange why the doctor didnt say a timeframe only thay it would be urgent.

Having a glass of wine to try to relax a bit tonight. Feeling surprisingly calm.

You will be seen in two weeks max . For me it was five working days from gp to appointment that included extensive mammo (you are young so be prepared for mri scan or ultrasound), and biopsy under ultrasound (sounds scary - it was fine) then two weeks (ten working days) for results. From first 'oooo, that's odd to me now, including mammos, various biopsies, lump removal, lymph node stuff, lots of patholgy, second op on Thursday to remove a bit more margin is ten weeks. Quick!

More than likely it is something ductal to do with breast feeding and is completely benign. Breast cancer care uk has an excellent website with lots of info. You can't do anything now so push it to the back of your mind and don't worry as it is really more than likely just to be to do with milk build up.

weebarra · 17/06/2017 10:21

You'll get an appointment before two weeks. It's probably breastfeeding related. Mine wasn't but that's very very rare - more than 9/10 lumps are benign.
Where in Scotland are you? I went to the clinic at the breast unit in the Western in Edinburgh, staff are fabulous.
