Glandular fever knocked me flat from August to February and left me with lifelong health problems and I'm not an unusual case.

I think going travelling in July is a bit optimistic.

Sorry.

Guitargirl · 13/06/2017 18:58

I had it aged 16. I was off school for about 10 days with some tiredness afterwards. A friend of mine had it and was in and out of school for months. It varies - fingers crossed your DD doesn't have it too badly.

ferriswheel · 13/06/2017 20:35

I had two hellish weeks. Dosed up on orovite7 and was back to normal, almost immediately. Even the doctor was staggered by my recovery. I'd not push it though. You dont want landed with ME which does sometimes happen. She'll know if she can manage or not.

ginorwine · 15/06/2017 14:34

My dd throat is improving
Expect fatigue next ?
She determined go Thailand and as over 18 not sure can stop her
I've explained that it may be v scary there if relapses
At least I have got gp to do liver test because if that affected she won't be able to drink and that may deter her as she wants to party as wel as travel ..

I was laid up with it for 4 weeks. It so we like it's improving. Could she arrange a doctors appointment for a day or so before just to get checked out and some advice for how to look after herself while travelling?

Intransige · 15/06/2017 14:40

I had glandular fever with practically no symptoms, it only showed up on an immunity test later on that I'd had it. So it does affect different people differently. I wouldn't push myself too hard though if I had it - there is a theory that it can cause ME.

Guiltypleasures001 · 15/06/2017 14:42

Horrendous for me at 15 had it for 18 months, think it's left its mark with autoimmune probs as well

ginorwine · 15/06/2017 14:42

Yes I'm going to schedule gp appt
That will decide and if not try use note claim on insurance
I worry about the new things for body to deal with there tho
I've booked her into a herbalist to try help immune system
We will just have to do v v last min things like load money on a travel card if poss
Crikey I feel like I need a rest but it's just worry
I'm afraid of her getting ill out there after a long haul flight

OP posts:
danTDM · 15/06/2017 14:44

I was ill with very sore throat for a week and tired for about 3 weeks after. Then just has to get on with it. Coped fine to be honest.

I was 40 something though, with a small baby.

A different situation. A lot older.

I am sure she'll be fine. No alcohol, loads of water and super healthy food and lots of sleep... I think as she is young, she should be fine given a few weeks proper TLC and rest.

Llamacorn · 15/06/2017 14:47

It completely depends on the person unfortunately.
Dd2 was in hospital for 2 weeks with it and ended up with complications to her spleen, it took months and months for her to feel better and she had to do limited activity for weeks.

Dd3 also had it and bounced back fine after a couple of weeks.

Definitely a trip back to the GP to discuss, ultimately as she is over 18 I think it would be her decision as to how she feels and wants to deal with it. I know that must be hard for you as you want to make sure above everything that she will be ok, hopefully armed with information from the GP you can make a decision together.

ginorwine · 15/06/2017 14:48

Thanks
I'm try to go daily smoothies and good food
Trouble is when she hits Thailand she will drink with rest of em
Gp liver test will tell us if spleen enlarged which wd mean that she can't drink
She says - being honest - she knows she will party out there - she will have 2 weeks here of a levels and rest of time as much support from me food wise etc she can get
Most people say terrible exierince of gf - happy to hear some people had it and recovered quickly ...

OP posts:
danTDM · 15/06/2017 15:01

My spleen was enlarged. I drink a lot of wine! I just stayed off booze for 2 weeks, I remember clearly.

Was fine after. More or less. I also has another virus at the same time, CMV. All caught from daughters nursery.

Yes, go with smooothies/rest/complete detox and I think she will be fine.
I was told not to lift DD for a week because of spleen.

Basically, just take it easy.

ginorwine · 15/06/2017 15:09

Hi dan
How did you kno about your spleen ? The gp didn't raise it
I did .. she said she had pain to her left side and he then mentioned it can affect spleen but didn't say if dd affected or not so I asked for liver function test .

DD (15) is just starting to recover after about 6 weeks. First 3 weeks were horrendous, just the effort of going to the loo would wipe her out fo another couple of hours. Cried with the sore throat (and she has a high pain threshold, regularly dislocates knees thanks to JHS) and lost almost a stone in a week. Then ended up in hospital with a kidney infection and swollen spleen. She is due to go away on holiday with a friend's family in 9 days and to be honest, it's still touch and go. She has to learn to pace herself and know when to stop or this will last way into the Autumn.

ginorwine · 15/06/2017 15:36

Lucy that's terrible
All the v best to you
My dd has ( unless I don't know yet !) managed to sit an a level today and did manage revise this am

took me 3 months, starting with a throat infection, then sinusitis then a week of horrible tonsillitis (in a 6 week period) got diagnosed and took a further 6 weeks to shake it completely to feel normal again

Apart from 1 week of tonsilities I was working (doing work placement in an East London firm) and commuting but it did take it out of me. Also caused me to gain 3 stone - it took 2 years for my metabolism to get back to normal

danTDM · 15/06/2017 15:54

Hi gin
The doc made me lift up my top, he diagnosed Glandular Fever instantly , before the blood test results.

You could see my spleen was enlarged, no question. Obviously her LFT's will be off.

Bless her, sitting exams today.
Seriouslt, good food and rest. I reckon she'll be fine.
It took me 10 days, then DH handed DD back! I was ok.

ginorwine · 15/06/2017 15:54

It looks like some people can keep going then whilst others are felled by it ..
